AMD has decided to push forward the launch of the Radeon HD 2900 series to May 2nd instead of the original date on May 14th. Products demonstrations and reviews are allowed to appear on that date so it is considered a soft launch. However, AMD is still keeping Radeon HD 2600 and 2400 under wraps until the big day on May 14th. Radeon HD 2900 XT cards will be available from that day onwards for the price of US$399 to be positioned against the GeForce 8800 GTS. The final clocks for Radeon HD 2900 XT stood at 740MHz core and 825MHz for memories.

If they push forward the launch, they must be very scared of 8800 Ultra and all negative press and posts on forums after Dailytech benchmark.
Damage limitation exercise...
Does nvidia even have to release the ultra given the 2900xtx's poor performance from dailytech's numbers?
I guess if they just wanna rub it in or something... nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah!

They may release the 8800 ultra and lower prices of other parts below it. That may put a break into AMDTI's pricing of their x2900xt. Many 8800gts 640 meg cards can be found at newegg for around $370 already.

They must be crapping their pants at AMD with that article racing all over every enthusiast forum on the net right now.
Glad I'm not working there this week.

With all the bad mouthing people are doing towards AMD, they seem to forget just how awesome the XT really is. We have yet to see how it handles high res with lots of AA- the 512MB or RAM could hurt it. We just don't know. But regardless, at $400 it is an extremely good buy- considering that it can easily oc to a point where it will perform close to the GTX. Not bad. But for $100 more people will probably just opt to get the GTX.
my question about the whole x2900 thing is, does ati even have engineers that can write sound drivers for that card, considering its supposed to support sound also?
