I just replaced by crt with a viewsonic lcd (which has no means to center or size the image). I need to move up about 1/2 inch.

I tried the (ancient) xvidtune, but it just complains that settings are out of range, even if I don't change anything. It reads xorg.conf, but nvidia driver isn't really even using it (it just reads settings from the hardware).

Really? What's your native resolution of you LCD-TFT? Are you sure you're
using it? how is the LCD-TFT connected (DVI, VGA?)

If you've installed the binary nvidia driver you can use nvidia-settings
to select different scaling method.
