it could just be a die shrink, usually when nvidia goes from a x000 to another x000 product they is usally a major revision ion hardware design.
absolutely right.
We want a 8900GTX!!
btw I am wondering what will happen after the 9xxx series... Nv gforce 10800GTS? :D

Or it might be the GeForce X800GTX. :p
They could go hexadecimal - GeForce A800GTX.

That would rock. I'd buy it just cause of the name. That's so 1337- using HEX in the name.

it would always be better than all those "X" in recent names (let alone Ati' cards...) do they think the extra "X" make them faster?

Maybe they just need a new name. Geforce was a stupid name straight from the original. "Riva" and "TNT" were better.

I like that idea!

If I remember right the Geforce 3 was much delayed due to it being designed for a certain process size, and very difficult to fabricate on anything larger. But the TSMC process wasn't ready, so the card was delayed and nvidia lost quite a bit of money. Eventually it did come around and eventually it was a good card, but it could have come out much sooner and been very dominant. That's about the time they signed a deal with IBM to use some of IBM's fabs to help out for limited quantities of high speed products (though I don't think IBM fabs any of their stuff anymore). Ever since then they've always introduced their new high end products on a proven process.
I remember this happening with the Geforce FX. nVidia blamed TSMC for the FX's poor performance. IBM fabbed the FX5700 and for the 6 series they switched back to TSMC.

There was no excuse for the Geforce FX series performing bad, they were just fked up cards...

To add to it.
65 nm, mainstream PCIe 2.0
Nvidia has already taped out its next generation mainstream chip. It calls it D8M where D stands for Desktop and M stands for Mainstream and number 8 indicates that we are talking about an 8th generation product.
We can confirm that we are talking about 65 nanometre chip and that it supports PCIe 2.0 interface. Intel is already coming with X38 chipset in Q3 that will support PCIe 2.0 and AMD has already showcased its Rx7x0 generation of chipsets that can support PCIe 2.0.
We are sure Nvidia has a chipset with PCIe 2.0. The chip also supports HD DVD and Blue-Ray hardware acceleration as it features 3rd generation Video processor.
Nvidia's new card will feature internal S/PDIF on board the graphics card on a reference design and Zotac has that even with G86. We wrote about it here and even tested the card here.
D8M Video processor will speak via Windows audio drive and should avoid all issues and proprietary codec and enable HDMI over DVI on every card.
The D8M chip and cards based on it are scheduled for September.

Shortly after we had 7900's in notebooks we had 7950GX2's.
Maybe shortly after 8800's in notebooks well have 8950GX2's.
Looks like 8M means mobile parts from these nv slides. Seems dubious that they would also be using D8M to indicate mainstream desktop parts...

looks like nv are going to spring another big suprise on us.
id like to see a 8900 GTX with 40%min more performance than the 8800GTX, theyve been working on getting parts on 65nm for ages now.
here's to another solid release by NV!

There's no point of getting an 8900 if G92 is coming before Xmas.

I doubt g90/92 is coming before Christmas.. G80 is too far ahead in terms of sales.

The G80 is still selling, so from a marketing stand point, it would be a bad move to launch a new card line until AMD comes up with a card that beats it. Nvidia will probably keep the G80 out for over a year.
BTW, I still love my 8800 GTX. :D
Nvidia tends to release at least two high end GPUs a year. We will see a die shrink before Xmas at the very minimum.

You also have to look at things like. If Nvidia releases another card again 4-5 months ahead of ATI's R700, and it preformed better. Well you could imagen what that would do. I personally hope Nvidia comes out with a new card just before Crysis comes out.

Why you doubt on it?? M. Hara said G92 is scheduled in Q4 this year.... Moreover he said NVIDIA will continue their schedule : High-end GPU by the end of year and mainstream GPU in the Spring....
I hope G80-->G92 will be like NV40-->G71 in performance rating....
