"Inquirer" AMD IS DOING something that we haven't seen a chip company do in a long time, sandbagging its official roadmaps.
A while ago we told you about the intended launch frequencies, basically 1.9-2.5GHz, but that was before B0 parts came back.

We were told that the B0 stepping was due a few weeks ago, early April to be inexact, and they've been returned for inspection. If they were clean, they would be the launch stepping, and the Q2 date was do-able. If not, add in another few months, and you were looking at the end of Q3, maybe.

We understand that people in Austin were 'dancing in the aisles'. When asked if that was because of B0, we were told that people are very happy, very very happy, but he had 'never heard of such a thing'.

Another source claimed the memory controller, long a bottleneck in K8 scaling, came in way better than expected.

So what do you end up with? A massive gain in frequency. How massive? Almost 500MHz. Instead of the much touted launch parts, look for five SKUs at launch, AM2 quads at 2.6GHz, 2.7GHz and 2.9GHz, a dual at 2.7GHz and a quad on socket F at 2.8GHz.

We think whoever worked this magic deserves a pat on the head, a few days off after launch, and quite possibly a raise. Twnty per cent faster out of the gate is nothing to be sneezed at. The only question that remains is what volumes AMD can deliver at these speeds. µ

Cant wait to see some numbers!

@ that speed, and 40% faster "per clock" compared to intel, AMD may just make a huge comeback this round. ;)

If it is indeed 40% faster per clock, it may be Intel trying to squeeze out the last few mhz they can out of their chips to keep up, instead of AMD. Though it's certainly been demonstrated by overclockers there's nice headroom in the Core 2's at this time, so they may be able to stay competitive yet, especially if they can get down to 45 nm before AMD.

Hard to say exactly how this will play out, but I can't wait to see AMD show their cards.

Yeah...I'm sure later today there will be a story stating that Barcelona is actually going to be slower than orignally thought and then a third stating they'll be exactly what AMD originally thought.

That way, all their bases are covered and they'll be "right" no matter what happens.

I just find it strange that the inquirer and fudzilla are the only ones who seem to post news about new hardware on a daily basis. I must admit the first place I go to for news about hardware especially videocards is the inquirer and more recently fudzilla.
We can all bash those site but to be honest rumours are better than no rumours even if some of it is rubbish.

I'd rather not get blue balls every single day because they report the hardware equivalent of "Batboy lives!" :rolleyes2

Much as I want this to be true, I await some numbers from an actual source, not a fiction site.:D
