Samsung starts making 1GB DDR II modules Based on 512Mbit chips

THE NEXT BIG THING in memory is with us. Sort of. Samsung has announced it has begun mass production of 1GB DDR II DIMMs, a definite industry first.

The new memory modules are put together using 512Mbit chips. According to Samsung, the 1.8v chips have a 4bit pre-fetch and are capable of delivering 533Mbps. The company claims that the performance can be extended to 667Mbps for 'special system environments' but does not detail what those are.

The company has said that engineering samples of DDR II have been with chipset manufacturers since May last year but there has been no sign of DDR II chipsets reaching customers so far. Though it seems fair to assume that Samsung wouldn't have gone into mass production if those chipsets weren't about to hit the market and we do know that all of the major chipset makers have DDR II plans.

According to Samsung, the new chips and modules are Jedec compliant. µ

HERE (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=8488) is a link to the artical.

Hmmm I wonder how long it will be until these suckers and the chipsets start to hit the retail market.

lmao and Intel said we will never see systems with 4GB of ram for a very long time :D

Intel was right about it though. Who needs 4gb of RAM unless your running a terminal server w/50 clients connected??? No game currently available or even on the near horizon requires even 1 gig of RAM. 4 gig won't be commonplace or even needed for literally years.

Uhhm eyah sure

I predict that 1 gig will become common for most users until the end of the year.

common for most users or most gamers. there's a big difference there.

i doubt most users have 512MB yet. but they might, since winXP doesn't run all that well with 256. but 1GB? I don't see how the average person has even an inkling for the need of 1GB.

as a gamer though, yeah, I would tend to agree. 1GB at the end of this year is not unfathomable, although I doubt many people will do that compared to just going with 512MB or 768MB. how many people actually run out of RAM with 512MB? I don't know any.

I was in the Generals fourms and it seems about 80% of the users there has 512MB of SD or DDR Ram. about 2% with 1GB.
It's becoming quite common with Unreal games also. I had 384MB of PC2100 ram and that wasn't enough for Unreal 2003 long load in times and unbarable at the begining of the level as it cached!

I can certainly vouch for wanting 1gb in unreal engine games. UT2003 pauses for a while when I exit it if I'm running 512meg. With a gig the system is free'd up almost instantly.

That said, 4gb is still going to be overkill for quite some time and it will be much longer than one year before 4gb is common or even needed.

I didn't say if it would be common http://forums.beyondunreal.com/images/smilies/mwink.gif
