I got my X360 updated with Spring Update and found something interesting.

Anyone know what Reference Levels do? It's from Display in Console Settings. It has three levels to choose, Standard, Intermediate and Expanded. I'm not sure if it makes any difference but I selected Expanded and black appears to be even blackier.

I don't know. O_o

I just tried it and it makes everything more colourful... kinda like that Vibrancy setting you get on the NVIDIA drivers.

Could this help with the occassionally washed out look you get thru' the vga cable?

Maybe wishful thinking, but I've tried it and to my eyes it appears to improve things thru the VGA cable.

Nevermind. Sound Settings != Display Settings. Need to get my eyes checked!

I've been yelling about the washed out VGA output for quite some time. I'm really happy to hear that Microsoft addressed this issue.

Set mine to Intermediate, looks perfect.

BRILLIANT update from Microsoft, great work.

EDIT: One other thing that boggles me though, for some reason, on the MSN thingy ....it uses a username I set absolutely ages ago, doesn't match the one on my PC. Hmmm

it says it only affects 480p TV's and DVD playback.

cool update though. they added marketplace as its own tab and some other ****. pretty cool.

Erm... well it definitely affects the dashboard... and I'm running that at 1080p using a VGA cable! Difference between normal and the max setting is like night and day.

Have no idea what it will be like in games though. Don't have time to chek either - not that I thought it looked washed out particularly in any game other than Fight Night Round 3.

When you log into 'my xbox' www.xbox.com, what signin do you use? I'm going to guess that your xbox live ID is associated with the older instant messanger id, rather than your newer one. I have no idea how to change that :(

Got it worked out, all I had to do was changing my blasted nick name again after the update. LOL I jumped the gun a bit.

So... from the article this is what I get

The VGA cable for the X360 outputs a black level of 7.5, and most TVs expect 0 over the VGA cable- so the effect is blacks appearing lighter, and washing out colors? This update allows you to change that though, just without numbers

How is it possible to know if the black level your TV/Monitor expects is 0? Cause it does look better, but I never really thought of the colors as washed out without it. Wish they would have added a little preview box like you get in the Nvidia control panel

There are reports going around that since the update Anti Aliasing has been borked for VGA users. Not been on my 360 yet to test the theory.

the colors are just wow after this update. Or maybe it was me looking at them with no light source in the room but my TV as 12:00AM...

I switched back to VGA on my 42" Westy and that update made a WORLD of difference. The expanded setting is way to dark for my set (black crush all over the place) but like Peoples-Agent mentioned Intermediate is PERFECT! This was a great update for the 360.

None more that I've noticed, everything looks better with the same AA as before

I've only played one game though

Same here, looks sooooooooo much better since the update. :)

I never realised what people meant by "washed" colours , but now ....I can see how much much better the colours and picture is. Impressive!
