View Full Version : How to clean the cpu?

I just ordered a new hsf for my cpu, because the old one is starting to act a little screwy and I've noticed that my computer tends to run hotter lately than it used to.

I used Arctic Silver with my last one (TT DragonOrb3), so I'm wondering if there's anything I need to do to clean the CPU off before I install the new Aeroflow?? Ether or rubbing alcohol or something? Or can I use the same layer of Arctic Silver as before and just slap the new hsf on top of it?

Thanks.

If it's all clean I tend to use the same layer of AS. You can clean with either isopropyl or acetone. I prefer acetone, but iso will do.

I will always clean the cpu before attaching the hsf, I use the wifes nail polish remover ;)

I clean mine off with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and hit it with some real fine sandpapper 800grit or higher so I can get a good even thin layer.

-Most nail polish removers are acetone based, but with added contaminents such as fragrance and conditioners which would leave residue.

I clean mine off with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and hit it with some real fine sandpapper 800grit or higher so I can get a good even thin layer.

-Athlons are very sensitive, I wouldn't dare use sandpaper. Using sandpaper on the heatsink to polish the surface for better contact is a common practice called "lapping", but make sure all the grit from the paper is far gone before installing it.

i agree madthumbs, i p0wn3d my 1800+ just my pushing on the core a little too hard, i think sandpaper would completely destroy an AMD.

Yeh, sandpaper kinda sounded scary to me too. I've got some nail polish remover, but with all the extra junk in there I'll prolly just run to wally world and get some isopropyl or something.

Thanks for the .nfo everyone :)

I heard that auto carb cleaner does the trick, you just spray it into a container, and dip some lint free cloth in it. I've NOT tried it though, so it's up to you!

Any naptha-based lighter fluid, (the kind you use to fill a zippo), will make short work of thermal goop and not leave a residue.

Just squirt some on a paper towel and wipe it off like magic! :)

Paper towel, toilet paper?.... Leaves lint behind. Just steal one of your sister's cotton swabs. I wonder... anything flammable soaking into the pcb...
