View Full Version : How long to wait for x38 & Wolfdale & DDR3?

Now that the whole nVidia/ATI DX10 thing has finally come to an end, well almost, it's time for me to get my next system together.
I'd love to get x38 & Wolfdale & DDR3 system together but I'm having a hard time working out how far away they are. DDR3 boards are out now but I can't find DDR3 ram anywhere. DDR3 might be a bit expensive/under powered when it comes out but I don't do whole system upgrades very often so I need to make sure that I can't just swap out one or two things for a while.
I'm waiting also for the X38 chipset. It's coming on the 22 of July, along with price cuts. DDR-3 mamories aren't available yet and have a JEDEC timing of 7-7-7 at 1066MHz, 9-9-9 at 1333 and 10-10-10 at 1600 MHz. Don't know the fast one what latency will have.

plus the current price rumor is about 450-500 bucks for 2gb of ddr3
This article compares DDR3 and DDR2 performance on the latest P35 chipset, and looks like now is not the time to upgrade to DDR3 yet:

its been like that ever since i can remember..edo to sdram...to ddr...and on and on and on...it seems to me that the first generation of a RAM tech is no better then the last but can be scaled beyond what the previous generations could do. thats why i always wait untill it matures a bit before i can give recommendations to clients or for my personal use....

i dont even think there is really a performance benifit from say 667 to 1066, at least in games
the only thing that i can recall that pushes memory is encoding/decoding work and/or rendering
i think they will be producing motherboards with two DDR2 and two DDR3 slots (4 total). that should be future-proof for a while.

:rofl
man, those titties have terrible latency! hahahahahaha

Could you guys explain to me what is the difference between the new P35 chipst and the upcoming X38 chipset?
I guess each chipset is designed for different purposes?
Also, will there any other chipsets soon (talking about the high end) or just these?

Yes these are old, droopy titties. Saw it but was lazy to correct it :p Happens when you're tired and when greek is your mother language :D

I think the only high end will be the X38. Some enhancement for the memory controller perhaps in the same manner as 865-875, or 965-975X. Plus P35 does not officially support DDR3-1333, while X38 does.

What do you mean it does not officially support DDR3-1333? Anandtech's articles shows it does. Another difference betwee P35 and X38 is that the latter supports dual PCI-e x16 at full speed.
Will using DDR3-1333 mean single channel, or will it be a 2:1 ratio with the FSB like the old AXP nforce 2 days?

still only crossblow? no SLI?

Wait.... so whats the difference?
x38 supports PCIe 2.0 correct?

Yes and dual x16 slots.
All we need is official SLI support!

Only problem with that is Nvidia wants to keep selling their chipsets. If they open up SLI to the X38 platform then they're going to lose a lot of customers.

That's probably true. However, they might sell more graphics cards to people that prefer Intel chipsets.
It would be nice if the recent deal between Intel and nVidia did include SLI support for Intel chipsets.

Yeah, that's true, but nvidia doesn't sell mobos, just the chipsets to the mobo makers.

Exactly, & i wouldn't mind to pay a very expensive intel chipset due to SLI royalties.

This sounds good to me:

X38 will be the only Intel 3 series chipset to fully support dual x16 PCIe graphics. It was interesting that Intel did not specify CrossFire graphics in their literature, but we don't want to read too much into what wasn't said.
SLI on Intel chipsets :drooling:
