I wanted to see who thought which were better in the 3 major wars between Tim Sweeny and John Carmack (though they respect each other as primary competitors)

Also, if someone could bring back to memory what Doom 1/2 went up against that would be great. It couldn't be Hexen, though, b/c it used doom's engine.

doom was vs the fps'er :D

Quake is the best fps hands down.

Unreal and UT FTW!

05-11-07, 08:41 PM
I'm going to have to go with Quake2 and 3. After that, UT2004.

Duke 3D is my all time favorite. Maybe because it was the first real game I ever played, and first game on a PC. Before I played Quake.

If I really had to choose though.
Duke 3D / Quake = tie
Unreal 1 vs Quake 2 = tire
UT 99 vs Quake 3 = UT 99.

Quake 3 is horrible. Quake 1 and 2 are the best. 3 is crap. 4 is alright.

Take Unreal 1 vs Q2, Unreal 1 multiplayer was buggy and ran like crap but the single player was awesome. Overall Q2 was a better game but I love them both. I still remember going to internet cafes (when they were new in this area) and playing Q2 & Unreal 1 on spec'd out pc's rockin' Voodoo 3 3500's with 21" crt's :D UT '99 was better than Q3 hands down. iD focused way too much on dm with Q3 and sure great mods came out later like rocket arena and such but out of the box, UT was better mplayer game and offered so much more. Quake 1 blew me away when it first came out but everyone had love for Duke. *shrug* Good times

Duke 3D , Quake 1 - tie in both coop and dm (way way too much fun with both of these classics at lan parties)

Ureal 1 coop , Quake 2 CTF + rocket arena, tie rest was crap.

UT 99, Quake 3 DM - got boring after awhile...

Counter-Strike, Natural Selection, Day of Defeat and Half-Life Sven Coop owned everything else in it's heyday.

Stalker (now) but I feel Crysis may be the next big one with Quake Wars. I only wish Duke 4 would come out!

I'd rate all three Quake games as being more fun for me and my friends in multiplayer than the other choices here.

Although Duke was a lot of fun on dialup way back when.

For me Quake 2 is the best. I love music from this game. Old good times with my little 3Dfx...

I'd like to point out that Tim Sweeney had nothing to do with Duke Nukem 3D. 3D Realms developed Duke 3D, not Epic. Ken Silverman designed the "Build" engine which was sold to 3D Realms and used for Duke3D.

In my opinion, Duke3D is better than all those games. I never liked any game in the Quake series. And I only liked the atmosphere and music from Unreal 1, gameplay-wise I found it quite dull.

Quake 2 and then Quake 3... after UT2003 and 2004

Duke Nukem 3D hands down.

Laser trip mines, Shrink rays, Freeze rays, and jet packs.

Nothing was more fun than running around trying to stomp the guy you just shrunk...or freezing someone and just staring them down before shattering them...or the sound of that trip mine you setup in air duct being detonated.

The gameplay was so fast and fluid, if you had the reflexes you could become godlike.

I don't know why no one has copied this formula.

Duke 3d, better than all of the rest. Best multiplayer weapons ever.

Well, everything started in 93, when i got DooM I on my 486DX2 66MHz.

In 94, DooM II arrived, & i was playing both games till 96, when Duke 3D arried.

Duke3D was amazing game ! (& the Editor of the game was unreal, for tha time)

Those "old" games had an excellent cooperative gameplay.

In 96, Quake 1 arrived, & oh my god ! (VESA modes)

Then, Quake II arrived in xmas 97, & i got my first Voodoo 1 :)

Well, i got that Voodoo 1 a little sooner, when the Tomb Raider 1 patch for Glide was launched :D

But, overall, i think that Quake series won all the time.

John Carmack is god as a programmer. The ones who had old machines (that used to last years), will know the reason. Nobody like ID used to optimize games like they.

Those good old days, with Watcom C++ & Assembler optimizations :drooling:

Quake 3 is still the king of 1v1/Deathmatch gaming.

Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight

05-13-07, 12:35 PM
Doom hands down for me.

But I think things may have been a bit different if the original "Blood' had better marketing. That game kicked some serious ass.

Next I would have to say Unreal. Just awesome.

Ive always enjoyed iD titles more than Sweeney titles tbh...

Quake is the best fps hands down.

Ya that's why there is '0' people playing it. Hands down alright.. lmao. Quake IV is/was a total shambles and anyone knows that, just load up the game and see for yourself.;)
