View Full Version : Would going from a 7800gtx to an 8800gts make sense?

Given my current system specs, do you think it would be a worthwhile upgrade or would my other hardware will noticably bottleneck its performance?

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
DFI Lan Party UT NForce4 Ultra-D
2GB OCZ Platinum PC3200
BFG 7800GTX OC
OCZ ModStream 520W PSU
80GB Western Digital 7200/8mb

I am only wondering because I am getting a Dell 2407 and would like to have decent performance when making the jump from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200.

Thanks!

I say go for it. Get the 640mb version. I don't think you will be bottle-necked that badly either.

I agree grab the 640mb version, you will want the extra ram for the big DX10 titles coming out. You will see a good jump in graphic performance, coming from a 7800GTX.

Your system should be good for now, especially once you get the 8800.

Thank you.

My final question: should I get a new power supply?

The 12 volt outputs 28 amps, just 2 shy of the required 26. I just want to make sure I have the necessary power.

Thanks again!

My system doesn't get over 400 watts draw according to my UPS. So you will be fine IMO.

If it works with your 7900GTX, it should also be good for your 8800GTS. According to this it sucks +15W over a 7900GTX.

He's running a 7800 GTX- but yeah your PSU should be good. Though don't even consider trying to run two GTSs in SLi with that PSU- it'll fry in a heart beat.

I say go for the 640MB GTS. You'll be very pleased with it. :D I am with mine. ;)

I had a 7950GT 512MB and swapped to a 8800GTS 640MB i noticed a HUGE difference in performance! .....

You will be bottle necked with that cpu.

Went from an 3800 at 2.65ghz to a E6400 and noticed a big performance increase in games like oblivion with the 8800 Gts.
I was even cpu limited somewhat in nfsmw and such.

Though you will see a jump up from the 7800gtx

I went from 2 7800GTs to my 8800GTS 640, never looked back. You will be missing some performance, but guys with C2duos are saying the same thing. The 8800 gave me noticable increases in fps and IQ, even with my bottleneck. :p

I don't mind building a new system if it's warranted, which is what I'd need to do if I move to a new chipset. However, I still see my system as being somewhat decent and would like to exhaust it as much as possible before retiring it.

With that said, I am a big believer in not doing things half-assed. If you're going to do it, do it right. I don't want to get a card and have 50% of it's potential being held back because of my other hardware.

I had a AMD 64 4200+ dual core running at 2.6GHz when i first got my 8800GTS, i also noticed a BIG performance increase when i upgraded to my conroe!

In a topic i recently saw in the hardforum someone had two 7800GTX's and was scoreing around 7900 marks while when they upgraded to one GTS they got 8700... and that is just one card.

An 8800GTS will give you an orgasmical engorgement in your e-penis over your 7800GTX.

Holy crap, so even with a GTX I am still only going to get 28 fps on Oblivion when maxed? That's maddening...

I think I may just hold off in playing in that resolution for a long while.

Normally game at 1600 by 1080..but, still yeah...wait for a refresh I think. :) Maybe I will get a c2d when the new e6600 replacement (e6660???) or something instead. Wait fora g80 refresh or r650...

man my 7800 GTX SLI setup is nearly 2 years old!!!
