Definitely worth it. Unless, of course, you have a really outdated system, in which case you won't see its full benefits.

so about how much more performance in % will I expect to see?

LOL- uh, 200%? Something like that atleast. :p It's a whole lot better. :p

ok who wants my 6600GT 128MB DDR3(500/1000) for 50 bucks shipped? lol

by the way, would u guys say it's good enough for SC2@1600x1200 /w 16AF 0AA?

Just done an upgrade from a 7600GT to an 8600GT... I wasn't expecting much... but can't believe the difference. I'm really impressed by the 8600 card.

Fairly good difference that is like 6600 GT to 7800 GT. So roughly double minimum.

Um- the 7800GT is more than 2x faster than the 6600GT. The 7800GT was nearly twice as fast as the 6800GT. And the 6800GT is twice as fast as the 6600GT. Id say the 8600GT should be nearly four times faster than the 6600GT. Hence, 200% performance boost.

you might want to consider getting the 8600GTS

http://techreport.com/reviews/2007q2/geforce-8600s/index.x?pg=1

Unfortunately, even an overclocked core can't help the NX8500GT overcome its fewer stream processors and pokey memory clock. The card may sell for half the price of an 8600 GTS, but it offers less than half the performance.

But that refers to the 8500GT, not the 8600GT.

my bad I was thinking he wanted a 85GT not a 86GT.

I was thinking of getting one of these from Circuit City when they were $109 after rebate. A pretty good deal, but I didn't think I'd see much performance improvement over my 6600GT SLI so I decided not to get it.

I would go 8800gts 320MB if I were u. Or stick it out a bit longer 'til Crysis game actually comes out (cards might be cheaper then). 8600GT would probably be pretty weak for that game anyways.

6600GT is a piece of ****.

Well, something on my EVGA 6600GT seems to have fried (cards no longer detect the SLI bridge), but I wouldn't necessarily say that they're any worse than previous cards I've owned..

Very rarely do I remember the 7800 GT being more then 2x faster then the 6800 GT. That not typical situation.

6800 GT is only 60-80% faster typically then the 6600 GT. 2x only occurs when you have memory bus saturation. 7600 GT is maybe 20% faster then 6800 GT, and then you have the 7800 GT being 20% faster then 7600 GT.

7800 GT is about 2 times faster until the 6600 GT memory bus gets saturated which then raises it to 3 times. So a minimum of double the performance.

http://firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_7600_gt_performance/page6.asp

So overall I still believe the 8600 GT will be a minimum of double to somewhere along the lines of 3 times faster but not much more then that, unless your looking at a game where the G8x architecture does extremely well at such as Oblivion.

8600 GT fluctuates alot depending on the game, there are cases of 7950 GT level such as Oblivion , RS:Vegas and the lower end of 7800 GT in gams such as Supreme Commander.

6600 GT is just outdated it was a great card for when it was released. You want POS? Try Geforce 4 MX 440. ;)

My 6600GT ran Lost Planet at about 3 frames per second.

It ran Doom 3 at a good constant 30+ back in the day.

My 6800 GT ran Lost planet pretty good at lower settings, but you max out the settings, and the card definitely shows its age.

Back in it's day, the 6600 GT was the modern 8600 GTS/ 8800 GTS 320mb card. It was a fabulous peformer for the cost.

I suggest you retake calculus 101. :D

4x is 400% the performance, or 300% faster.
100% = 1x, 200% = 2x, ...
50% faster = 150% the performance = 1.5x.

 my bad- was extremely tired when I typed that.

Coldpower- I've used both the 6600GT and 6800GT quite extensively- and the 6800GT is more often than not twice the performer than the 6600GT. I've also got extensive use with the 7600GT, and 7600GT SLi. 7600GT SLi is comparable to a 7800GT. That being said, when I was running dual 7600GTs I saw double the performance of what I got from my 6800GT. Thus, 7800GT ~ 2x 6800GT which is ~ 2x6600GT. Thus, the 8600GT should be nearly 4x faster than the 6600GT in all current, and too be released, titles.

my brother went from 9800xt(performance pretty much on par with the 6600gt minus sm3.0) to 8600gt, and it was worth it. he got the gigabyte one with passive cooling, its pretty nice.
