Have any of you tried this? I know of a few very well known overclockers that have done it and benched on exotic cooling.

I got this Thermalright HR03 Plus to drop my card temps and lately I have really been pushing my overclock up. I can run 690 on my core however I freeze after a while. There are no artifacts, and my card isn't overheating. 675 seems to be my current core limit that will not freeze.

I am convinced with a slight bump in voltage I could see 700MHz and perhaps higher. I didn't want to volt it to a level that would require crazy cooling.

A volt mod to go from 10-20 more on the core? I think it's a waste of time, especially since no game really pushes the card.

These 'people' that you know of,who would they be?
A link to some info would be helpful,I'm sure I'll eventually grab a couple 8800's,having the knowledge to volt-mod them ahead of time will ensure that I grab the correct model for the mod.Worked ever so well on my evga 7900's.

Anyways,interesting post

I signed up over at http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/ back when I used a vmod on my 7900GT SC. I must say though, that that vmod helped out a lot more than just 10 to 20 on the core. Doesn't seem like this vmod for the 8800GTX would be worth it, risk or performance, but it's your call, so good luck.
