I have gotten hold of money by selling off my right kidney...some mainland millionaire needed it or he was going gonna plonk it. :wtf:

I just bought a Gigabyte 8800 GTX and so far performance exceeds the 7800 GTX SLI setup I had hands down but, I am too demanding when gaming. I.e., the min FPS must be above 30 fps at res of 1600 by 1080 with 4X AA(min) and 16X AF (well can live with 8X AF)! :D

So here is the USD$600 question. My rig is in my signature...what should I do...what to get optimal gaming experience...I mean more FPS the better with AA, HDR and max AF etc. I can only do one or the other...not both...or wait..

So I need opinions please for you guys..what should do I?

a) Upgrade my CPU, mobo and memory to C2D 6420 (and overclock it), P35 chipset mobo and some medium performance DDR2-800 memory

or,

b) Get another GeForce 8800 GTX for SLI?

or,

c) Wait till next year for Barcalona and Penryn?

I read some articles about CPU scaling but I wanted your opinions guys...
...in the end i might just wait but, I have these 3 options for another week or so...

Please comment away..

Cheers lads / lassess

Just get another gig of ram. Thats about all you need right now to get rid of those frame drops. 1gb won't cut it anymore sadly.

Certainly the 2nd cheapest option after....waiting (=zero bucks) :D

You'll be CPU limited with 2 GTXs in what you have now....so not worth the money for what little you'll gain..
Another gig of ram will help..if you want to go on the cheap....
But I have to give the nod to your E6420 / 2gb DDR2-800 plan....that would make a plain nasty gaming rig  I know hehe

If you have $600 to spend, go E6600 Core 2 Duo and 2GB PC2-6400 ram. I'll let you decide what motherboard you want to go with. ;)

Don't get the e6600. Get the E6420. It's stock is faster and it has a bigger cache.

It all depends on what you are doing/playing, but I definitely vote for option A.

:eek2:

2.13GHz is faster than 2.4GHz? 4MB is bigger than 4MB?

Get the E6600 ;)

True according to anandtech but, I am worried about compatibility even though Thermalright's website have said the Ultra-120 ex is compatible with Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R...note mine is the GA-P35C-DS3R....so the cautiousness. From pics on gigabytes website, the north bridge heat sink looks the same. Why would it not be I suppose.

Come Christmas...I guess a small upgrade to a penryn or quadcore :p

Not bad...... 0.025 V up on default core voltage and 3 GHz....stable no problems!! :D

Looks good, similar to my o/c. I love the performance per $ I get with the e4300.

Can't you guys overclock a bit higher?

Tr1cK
06-11-07, 03:16 PM
I could, but the heat and noise would be way more than I want to deal with. Mine is running at a sweet spot for me. 1.2ghz overclock ain't bad!
