Hi, graphics card enthusiasts. I haven't been keeping up with the latest news in graphics card technology, so please bare with me.

My current system is a:

P4 3 GHz
2 GB Ram ddr 400
Asus motherboard (without PCI-E or SLI, bought in 2005)
GeForce 6800 128 MB Ram (standard version)

So, my question is, should i find a 7900 GS, or a 8600 GT?

Thanks in advance, guys. :D

Edit for more info on the cards:

7900 GS specs are: 256 MB, DDR3, 256 Bit
8600 GT specs are: 256 MB, DDR3, 128 Bit

I only play LotRO at 1280 x 1024, just to point that out because I know it matters.

There's no 8600GT for AGP, so it would have to be the 7900GS between the two.

Yup. You don't really have a choice in the situation. :(

There is the option for the X1950Pro which is currently the fastest AGP card on the market.

except for the 7950 GT, which is supposed to be equivilant, if not better than the X1950 Pro

The X1950XT AGP is the fastest AGP graphic card on the market.

It only pulls ahead in a few games, overall the X1950 Pro is faster. It does have one advantage, though. By default the 7950GT has 512MB of memory, the X1950 Pro has 256MB, but there are 512MB versions of the X1950 Pro out there.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I finally bought an x1950 Pro w/ 256 MB Ram, best part is, it is AGP.

Cheers :D

Yeah, that card is plenty good enough for your rig. :)

Had a Sapphire X1950 Pro AGP in the old P4 rig myself, played most games in high resolutions with AA enabled just fine.
