View Full Version : New Receiver on the way!
Well I just ordered a new home theater receiver since I am seriously thinking of getting a PS3. I already have a 360, a Toshiba HD-A2, an HD cable box and (once I decide to buy it) a PS3. I was looking for something that had component to HDMI and HDMI switching thats affordable so I decided on the ONKYO TX-SR605 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-0PDCZ5iIkf7/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=10420&I=580TXS605B). It's a 2007 model that seems to have everything I need. Hopefully this works out well for me. So what do you people think?

Very loaded, especially for the price. Even comes with Audyssey which works very well if you don't want to pay for a professional calibration. Nice find.

I think this may be the one everyone over at AVS was blowing loads about after it was announced. But maybe not...that one was only $399.
Let us know how it works out. I'll be in the market for a new receiver in a few months and I love Onkyo.

Thanks man. An evilchris seal of approval makes me feel alot better about picking this up. Once I get everything setup I will let you guys know how it works out. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to do about speakers. I don't have the space for my old AR1s anymore.

Wow?!? Where can I get it for $399?? I pre-ordered from Crutchfield so I can cancel with no problem.
Update: Well it seems that I had to pre-order this receiver MONTHS ago to get it for $399. Oh well... even at $499 it seems like alot of receiver for the price. I'm still getting it! :)

Nice. Be sure to give us a mini-review when you it comes in. I'm very interested in their HDMI implementation. There have been so many horror stories about HDMI switching that I've held off from buying a new receiver until those issues get straightened out. If Onkyo has a good implementation that doesn't degrade the signal, converts component to HDMI out well, and does 1080p passthrough properly I might have to take the dive.

Good choice! I've got the Onkyo HT-S894 which includes the HT-R640 A/V Receiver and I love it.

Thanks to companies like Sony and Pioneer, HDMI will never stabilize. You just have to deal with the issues.
I've had an Onkyo for a couple of years now and love it.

I just bought a Pioneer VSX-816-K today at best buy myself. I am probably working on a lower budget than most of you guys though, lol. My goal here is just for a receiver that produces nice accurate 5.1 sound mostly for games on my PC and occasional movie watching. Nothing overly loud, and no video functions (no dvd, switching, etc, as I really don't need these.)
Anyways, I am in a similar predicament: I am trying to figure out what speakers to buy for this. I am currently building a new sound system to replace a "home theater in a box" I bought way back in 2002. I've already spent $250 of my $750 budget which I am thinking of maybe overspending by a hundred or so.

I've decided to say f*ck HDMI for audio for the next few years. I think that like most digital audio technologies, it is going to be grossly underutilized in the consumer space for quite some time. So much more potential than spdif/toslink/adat, yet at the same time so useless.

FWIW I just returned the Pioneer and went and picked up the Onkyo 605 instead. Turns out that CircuitCity is selling it for $369 right now, which is within my budget range. This decision was also influenced by the fact that the Auzentech Prelude will probably have HDMI support via an extension board, and this receiver is capable of processing every HDMI audio function that currently exists, including 8 channel LPCM 192/24. Hopefully 7.1 LPCM support will be included in the preludes feature set. If so, that would be the holy grail of sound cards.

FWIW the deal I got last night just expired - but - you can still get a similar deal if you take advantage of the current offer, and use coupon code SAAQMA7AL9 at checkout. I think its like $404 after that. Still a very good price for this receiver, and you get free shipping right now too (though I prefer in store pickup.)

Anybody who has already bought an Onkyo 605 probably shouldn't read this as they'll probably be pissed off. :D
When I went into circuit city to pick this up, I also brought in a 10% off audio coupon found here (http://tinyurl.com/2oexv3) and somehow or another the cashier turned that into $75 off of what I paid online (I am certain she made a calculation error somewhere as she had to do it by hand.) She was probably a manager too as I doubt one can get this kind of price drop without some kind of manager password.
