DX10 testing of DAAMIT's latest Radeon 2900 XT has shown that its performance is lacking when it comes to Company of Heroes, the first DX10 game released to much fanfare last week.

Reviews have popped up all over the wibble, with Nate 'Goatee Gimp' Kirsch offering one of the best. And by best we mean succinct.

Running a Core 2 Duo system, as is de rigeur for the enthusiast these days, the Radeon 2900 XT came out below the 8800 GTS at both 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 with and without AA (and that's even with the AA set at guidelines that the boys at DAAMIT recommend).

The gap isn't much, but there's a good 10-15 per cent difference between the two cards, and this is rather disappointing for a card that has been repeatedly marketed as future proof.

It seems that DX10 remains Nvidia's game right now.

I get better FPS later on the tracks at various points and I decided to use the start because it's easy as a reference point and the first thing you see. So quick and easy to compare.

"Oblivion" near Anvil. Max quality settings-

Under Vista as Xion's settings from before with just 16xAF I get 31FPS and with no filtering 34FPS. Max in game settings, 8xAA MSTA 16xAF = 26FPS. That's with the grass at its correct value of 80.

He's not comparing it to the 8800gtx or Ultra. ;) The only place I've seen benchmark COH with the dx10 patch is legitreviews. Performancewise, the x2900xt is behind the 8800gts(640meg) from 6%(1600x1200, 0xAA) to 17%(1280x1024, 8xAA) in the resolutions and AA/AF levels tested.

The Dx10 patch for COH makes the game very pixel shader bound. They used an Athlon 64 X2 5600+ CPU, but stated that on a CD2 x6800, the 8800gts increased only 3 fps at 1600x1200 wo/AA. Also, the performance difference between the 8800gtx and Ultra cards are inline with their shader core clock difference.

The more interesting part of their review is their mention of AMD's Higher Clocked 1 gig GDD4 part coming out next month. I presume July in the same timeframe as retail availability of their mid/low end r6xx parts.

If you're are going to compare it to a GTX then both cards should be compared stock or overclocked because it's not like the GTX won't OC. If an overclocker buys a XT, GTS or GTX, it's going to get overclocked.

I agree, but prices of the GTS 640 meg has been dropping steadily and can now be found for well below $400 on online etailers. The x2900xt needs to come down in price as well and fast. Maybe the release of the 1 gig GDDR part will bring it's price down.

The cheapest GTS 640 meg on newegg is going for $330 after rebates. A GTS 320 meg can be found there for as low as $260 after rebates.

Yeah but I could not really recommend one of those to anyone for a number of reasons. I would tell someone looking to get a GTS to spend a few extra $$$ and get the 640mb version because it will save you from slapping yourself in the face sooner than you may realize.

That shot looking up the stairs looks pretty darn good. I have heard that some places in that game are incredible to look at while others are just kind of bleh.

I just started playing Titans Quest myself and so far its a really good game.

Gameplay is average, lighting is good. This is true.

I'd believe a X1900XT can handle it well because I saw up to 260 some frames in certain areas.
