I still get that to this day. :thumbdwn: And I'm using the latest non-beta drivers as well.
Thats weird then,i havent had that for ages.I do agree that nvidia still drag their asses with official drivers,i havent used a non beta/leaked driver for more than 2 months.

The difference is, the 8800gtx was faster than any card even with "Bad" drivers at the time. Nvidia looks to have been working primarly on getting stability and compatiblity for most of the past 7 months because it's a lot stabler than it was in the beginning. Now they are starting to work on improving performance as a primary concern as evident by larger performance gains from recent forcewares.
AMDTI also seems to have been doing the same thing pre r600 release. Working on stability and compatibility. But since Nvidia also seems to have improved on it as well, it's a mute point to argue drivers for either camp.
Both will continue to improve performance.
No. You will never find the 7900GTX dipping down into the "less than 20fps" bracket at 1600x1200 with no AA. Happens in FEAR even to this day, 7 months after the 8800 launched and I'm using the latest non-beta drivers, and this is regardless of whether I'm running a single GTS or both of them in SLi.
Furthermore, from the get go CrossFire with the 2900 in Vista is scaling significantly better than SLi. On the driver front ATi is doing better than nVidia has been for the past 7 months. Why? I think nVidia was just being lazy as they didn't have any competition. Now that ATi is popping out drivers every 2 weeks, with each driver being notably better than the last, and with CrossFire actually working like it should in Vista, I'm betting we're gonna' see more drivers and better drivers far more frequently from nVidia. But that does not change the fact that ATi is being far mores supportive towards their customers in regards to the drivers.

Haven't had that happen to me either recently.

Are you running Vista or XP? I'm using Vista Ultimate x64. And from all the reports I've read ATi's Vista drivers own nVidia's. Especially with CrossFire. Trust me, SLi in Vista sucks. :thumbdwn:

Again, I'd assume you're running XP. I haven't ran XP since probably the beginning of February. And back then, I did have the same problem.

I don't think it's a "mute" point at all (it's actually "moot" by the way) considering that these latest drivers from Nvidia offer up to a 30-40% performance gain in a lot of these titles like Oblivion, F.E.A.R., etc. How much more extra performance do you think they'll be able to crank out of G80?
They had 7 months to code drivers for better performance and, on the outset, it would appear they saved the performance drivers to release right when R600 did in order to increase the gap between the two. Pretty smart move on their part, but I think that G80 users have already seen the majority of performance increases that they will in titles. And I also don't much appreciate the fact that Nvidia did this.. it means that I owned a handicapped card for nearly 7 months while they sat on their butts and did nothing to increase performance w/ the drivers. I guess that would explain the 4-month gap we saw between XP releases.
I'm sure there will be tweaks here and there, but I wouldn't expect any more than 5-10% gains about 3 months from now if you're a G80 user.
Of course this is all speculation, but that's my 2 cents.

Maybe you could post up a screenshot of what you're talking about. I'll try to post a shot of the same place to compare.

Will do. It happens a lot when you get into the Armacham head quarters.

It did it on mine too. I was running XP at the time. There were some rooms on F.E.A.R. where you were underneath metal grates that were casting shadows and the scene was crawling along at about 15fps. It was barely playable.
Up until a month ago when I was still running a GTX it still had several issues running that game well.

I'd speculate that the x2900xt is bottlenecked by texturing/filtering performance to much more a degree than the g8x. Not much drivers can do about that.

Not sure I recall having a problem in any area like that. It'd happen to me at the most unusual of places. Rooms where there was not a lot of detail, and there weren't any bogies. There would be absolutely no graphical explaination for the significant drop in FPS. It was almost as if the system was having to dump everything in the framebuffer (or system RAM) and load new data... but that should be done seamlessly or at the begining of the level to prevent such stuttering. Never lasted more than 5 seconds at the worst.
Where exactly did this happen for you? You said a room where you were under some metal grates? Was it before or after you got to the armacham headquarters?

FWIW I've mentioned about having severe slowdowns in FEAR. Even with my GTX OC. Vista x64. Most of the time the game runs OK but sometimes I'll pop into a new area or hit a certain spot and it takes a dive into sub 25fps.

I don't remember exactly, but it wasn't at the Armacham HQ. It was just in a random building.

That's exacly what I'm talking about. SLi has no effect in such areas. Actually, SLi with the 8800s seems to be a joke at the moment. Well, atleast in Vista.

Some random building? Any random building I've ever tried to go into in FEAR, the doors where locked. :p Was it after the Armacham HQ, when you are making your way to the vault?

Dude, I don't even remember. I mean, there are lots of different locations on that game that you play in. All I remember is that it was in a dark room and I was walking around underneath some metal grates that were casting hard shadows all over the place.
But I had a lot of performance problems throughout that game. I got the random slowdown going from room to room when standing in an empty room the framerate would suddenly plummet from 60 down to 20-25. Pissed me off. Even with 8800GTX SLI on Extraction Point with my Conroe overclocked to 3.6 I got slowdowns to 30fps there at the beginning where the church is just before that freaky girl walks in and sets it on fire.

Ok. I've got the game installed on Xp. I'll give a whirl and see if there are dips into low fps. Hopefully, I can get to that building you guys are talking about quickly.

I remember having a lot of problems in the warehouse level on Extraction Point, too. The one that had the painting platforms stacked up everywhere.

I can't go through FEAR right now to find those areas where it slows down. But I'll try tomorrow evening when I get off work. I'll post screens, and if they don't properly show what I'm talking about I'll even post videos if you'd like. Just can't do it now as I'm rather busy.
