I'll try the wide-tent(8x) next. This is really cool, though. Cleaner edges than 4xAA and no performance hit! :)

Hmm, I wonder if it's even working on this game/driver, because I'm seeing no performance hit from wide-tent, either. And adaptive AA's not working on mine, either. Just tried it.
What's the main difference that I should be looking for with these extra AA modes? I haven't really been reading up on them much. Are they supposed to help w/ shader aliasing?
Even regular 4xAA on this card cleans edges up real nice, so it's kind of hard to tell:

He's running Vista.
And I used several different drivers (including the 165.01s) and always had flaky performance in F.E.A.R... right to the end. If you've never had it, then count yourself lucky. I don't know what we're doing differently. Maybe it's because you had your cards overclocked and I didn't. Many have had problems with it, though. There's even a thread about it on the forum; it appears to be some kind of memory leak occurring in the drivers that causes random slowdowns in games--F.E.A.R. in particular:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=91118
Yeah well then I definitely count myself lucky because both FEAR and the Expansion run balls to the wall in SLI for me and even with a single 8800GTX I never got close to anything as horrid as some of those users were reporting.

I kept mine on auto (2.0). It wouldn't let me manually select soft shadows.
Use the 2.0++ I just played riddick again the other day and thats the best setting, it enables soft shadows as well when you use that particular setting.
For me a single GTX with 8XAA+MS and 16XHQAF tore that game up.:D

That's correct, SM 2.0++ is perfectly playable on a stock GTX with AA|AF and it cuts my FPS in half.
In those last shots you showed Xion, I still see what looks like stepping around the door frame, particularly the left side, (behind Jimbo) and the signs. I get it too. AA does help and it doesn't completely correct things. There are some textures that aren't touched and I guess that is shader aliasing.
Here, Xion. I used red boxes around some areas from a shot of yours. See how some lines are no longer "jagged" and have been improved to "wavy". It's better and not good enough IMO. Again, I get the same thing. I'll post the same image via imageshack because "freeimagehosting.net" isn't always up or realiable.

Straight lines should be closer to straight. :p Orienting yourself at a 45 degree angle in a rooom is a good way to see what I am talking about. In the second room, with the DNA sampler you can see what I mean well on any edge that is being struck with light.

Yeah, but like I said it won't let me change my SM profile to 2.0+. The highest it will go is 2.0, so maybe it's a feature that only works on Nvidia cards for this game. *Shrugs*

Ok, I see it. That was with regular 4xAA enabled, so I'll try to go back to that same location and use narrow/wide tent and see if it helps any.

Was transparency AA working for you? It's not working for Blacklash and I. You can enable it, but the game doesn't take it.

EDIT-
"F" it, here's the second shot I'll host my damn self.
http://members.cox.net/malficar3/ScreenShotz35.jpg
I am currently playing under Vista x64 with my GTX stock. I got tired of hitting F8 to load ATiTool, sometimes I have to boot twice to get driver check disable to stick, so I said "F" it for now. I've been meaning to test the latest Vista drivers and I like them. (I dual boot) Plus I was testing with Xion in the other thread and he was running his HD 2900XT stock at that time, so I kept my card the same. Still using his quality setting from that thread too.
If two shots aren't showing it's because the other hosting service is down or acting up. I got tired of waiting on Imageshack to load. They will both appear from time to time :p
BTW they are 70-80% quality saves via Irfanview to reduce their size.

No I was even able to use the 2.0++ on the X850XT so im not sure why its not letting you use it with the 2900XT.
Its to bad because the 2.0++ is a pretty good step up and the soft shadows look great.

Well, I've tried it with two different drivers now, and it doesn't work. I installed the patch recently (1.1) and it will actually let me change it (whereas it wouldn't before w/o the patch) but the entire screen goes white when switch SM to 2.0+.
So maybe it's a driver issue. But it does specify that it's for Nvidia cards on the game menu.

Yeah but thats actually out dated now. Back when the game was first released only nvidia cards at that time supported that rendering feature.
The X850XT and up ran it fine so it must be a driver issue for you.

Well, I've been running through FEAR at 1680x1050 4xAA/16xAFHQ with all options maxxed ingame and still haven't gotten to an area with low sub 30 fps. The lowest FPS I've seen was 35 fps when there were like 5-7 soldiers standing around in a cutscene. I'm running the game in XP though.
The ingame benchmark gave me: Stock GTX clocks.
lowest: 43 fps
Median: 83 fps
Max: 200 fps
0% below 25 fps
0% below 40 fps
100% above

When I played the actual game, the lowest I ever saw it drop was 45fps. The "minimum" on that bench is deceptive, because it dropped to that right at the explosion at the end of the benchmark and bounced back up immediately.
But for whatever reason the 2900 doesn't do that well with FEAR in that benchmark.. at least not right now.

1600x1200, 4xAA, 16xAF, all in-game options maxed. I'm betting this is a driver issue for your card Xion. How could it do so good in Oblivion but then so poorly in FEAR?
Xion X2
06-03-07, 12:05 AM
Well I wouldn't say it "pwns" it; my average is 1fps higher. Then again I'm on a better processor, but that's still pretty close.
My thinking is that this is a complex issue and we may not know the answers until DirectX 10 gets here / ATI gets some better drivers out. I think there's a possibility that this card wasn't made with DX9 games like FEAR as its primary concern.

Yeah, I just wanted to rub in that for once my rig is faster than yours. But ofcourse, you just had to piss on my parade, didn't you? :p
Anywho- been playing Oblivion for a bit... I think this game could become very addicting. :D
Anyhow, up with the shots. But, for the record... disregard these first ones- I didn't have the graphics cranked up (I just thought I did :o). I'm posting 'em for the heck of it. It does look like that in order for me to play it with everything maxed, I'm gonna' need that second GTS. I'm thinking that I might try SLi again. So... here's the shots:

Okay, by this point I noticed that something just seemed off with the graphics- they didn't appear nearly as good as what I saw from your guy's screenshots. So... I hopped into the video settings and saw that indeed the graphics weren't cranked. So I promptly correct that, and this is what I got:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y225/Sir_Farts_A_Lot/Oblivion/Oblivion2007-06-0220-45-56-71.jpg
And at first I was soo happy cause I thought my one GTS was holding its own against your guy's GTXs. Only to have my party crapped. :( Oh well, that's why I bought that second GTS. I'm thinking I just my try installing it to see how well SLi has come along in Vista. If they have it scaling like it was in XP- I should be seeing 60FPS+ constantly. Or, atleast I'd hope. :D
Anyhow, I'm gonna' continue to play tonight, and I'll post more screenies as well.

You would be correct in speculating about the design choices made by AMDTI. It would appear that the R600 was designed around geometry/vertex shading performance. But they skimped(relatively) on ROP/TMU performance which is where the card gets it's texturing/Filtering performance. It was a trade off in design choice, but I think they could've balanced it much better. Games have yet to even get close to fully using dynamically created content via Geometry Shading.
With the recent announcement from EPIC's Tim Sweaney of Unreal Tournament 3 Dx10 being even more texture/pixel fillrate limited, texturing/Filtering limitations are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Nah, it's cool.
Xion, I decided to hold off on water cooling my components for a bit. That's a lot of $$$ for me to be spending right now as tight as things are. So... I bought that case Bearclaw was selling. Here's the newegg link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811196021
He sold it for $60 + an 80GB SATA 16MB Cache 7200RMP hard drive included. Couldn't resist. :p Anyhow, I'm giving air cooling one last chance. That tower is going to be significantly larger than what I'm currently using, and with that 140mm fan blowing cool air towards the cards+ that mammoth 250mm fan blasting the cards and CPU with cool air, I'd figure that would be far more than enough to keep the cards cool. Also, I'm gonna' slap dual 80mm fans in the back- I'm going to be certain to get a couple that move a crap load of air each. I'm also considering modifying the case so that I could have atleast a 92mm fan on the top as exhaust as well. Just thought I'd let you know since you and I talked quite a bit about me water cooling my rig. I really want to, and I am going to, I just can't do it now. :(
Anyhow, hopefully that new tower will drop my temps significantly. If so, that second GTS goes back in- and I'll be pwnin' you then. That's right- BE JEALOUS!!!
You wouldn't happen to have gotten your XT on water yet, would you? Any oc results?
