Thanks

Yea this has turned into a bad thread now. I was enjoying seeing the differences in real world benchmarks from the good guys that post in the forum and not the silly review ones.
Xion X2 don't let the silly trolls get you down! They come and go but the main posters stick around :captnkill: :captnkill:
I hope we can get another thread running soon without all the rubbish.
Please dont come on here giving people in this thread a hard time. If you dont have anything to give to this thread please post your comments elsewhere.
If somebody buys a product and actually says it's because they just want the best then thats fine, nothing to disagree with there. But when people actually claim the performance difference is worth it when it clearly is not then i'll give them a hard time. :)

thread derailing ftl
Its been repeatedly shown that the Ultra when overclocked can provide a substantial benefit over a GTX in high resolutions with great eye candy! If one can afford, great!!!

Why ? Are you the tread police ? To him its worth it,to you it isnt,so what ? And you are full of it if you think the 95$ price difference between a GTX and the ULTRA isnt worth it,evenmore so when he can watercool it.I notice a big difference when i clock my card to 625/2000 , compared to the stock 575/1800 that we are talking about here vs his 700/2300 and upwards those 95 bucks is a steal imo.But this thread keeps attracting people with a chip on their shoulder that just HAVE to butt in with crap like this that has NOTHING to do with with the content of this thread.I have contributed a lot to this thread but dorks like you spoil it ,just go away ,i mean you have nothing of consequence to say here anyway.:thumbdwn:

Are there any newer reviews to be found out there regarding the 2900 vs. the 8800? Every time I look for one online practically everything is old as in usually well before August. I'd like to see a review (other than Xion's in this thread) showing some comparisons with more recent drivers.
I'm particularly interested in seeing some IQ discussion since I know a few folks who are skeptical about how well the 8800 does vs. the 2900.

Worth is more a matter of opinion. The higher shader clocks of the Ultra can provide fairly nice performance gains in some scenarios, but there probably won't be many instances like that in most applications.
Lost Planet and FEAR seems to like the extra shading power though. ;)

There have been several new reviews out, but most seem to be concentrating on SLI vs Crossfire or Dx10 performance. Those reviews do use newer drivers from both camps. Guru3d recently did a performance review of the x2900pro with newer drivers for both camps being compared.
As to IQ, beyond 3d did a fairly well write-up of the r600 and talks specifically about AA/AF. It's written in a more technical nature, but they do go into some past issues with R6xx hardware with AF and Dx10.
The IQ of both architectures is pretty much an even field at this point. Both have strengths and weaknesses in terms of AA. AF turns a slight nod to the G8x though, but for most it's probably a moot point.

Give me a break, 95$ for an extra 2-4fps in the latest games? Yes well worth it, thats just going to completely change your gaming experience isnt it.
As for the rest, well your comparing an overclocked card to a stock one, both cards overclock and the performance gap between stock cards remains the same when both are overclocked.

Heres another, latest games all with 4xAA also where you would expect the gap to be at it's greatest due to memory but still around 10%.

Man your nuts if you think its only 2-4fps gain. Links have been provided that show higher gains than that for the ultra over the GTX in current and new games. If I had 600 bucks and my choice between the GTX or the Ultra, I'd take the Ultra as 95 bones isn't that much for the gains it will provide over the GTX.

Well it's around a 10% difference and in the latest games that represents around 2-4fps, of course it's different in older games where the framerate is much higher, for example, if a GTX gets 80FPS an Ultra will get 88-90fps. :)

this is a good review. It shows that a MSI 8800gtx that you can get for $490 after rebate is roughly 4-10% behind a Ultra. They overclocked it to 648/1062 or roughly 6% on the core. Compare it to the MSI 8800ultra at $565. You pay 15% more for roughly the same performance. Unless you watercool it (which is aditional money on top of the graphics card) you probably won't make that 15% up in performance.
But, sometimes buying the nicest isn't the most logical choice. Some people enjoy having the best and some people can afford it, so more power to em. Ferrari wouldn't be around if people were always making logical choices :)

much better review of DX10 games. LP has the greatest gains 30+%, most others are at 10-15%, but the gains are worth it.

Firingsquad is the better DX10 performance review as there actually using the latest drivers. :)

I find it interesting how far behind the 2900xt is to the ultra in 1024x768 (bioshock) yet by the time you get to higher resolutions the 2900xt passes the 8800gts (its price target).
Also, why is the 8800gts only getting 1.2 fps in company of heros at 1600x1200? Is that normal?
Guess I won't be playing world in conflict hahahah. My 2900xt can't hack it, at least in directx 10. It runs Directx 9 perfectly.

Not all gtx cards will do that much on the core, mine wont do more than 625 and 2000 mem.

Yes but some do more, mine does 675/2052 so you go by the average which is usually 648/999

All the cards in their round up got at least 630, some as high as 664. But I agree, not all cards are equal. But my guess is more perform over 630 than under 630, but what do I know :)

I did a minor system upgrade over the T-Day weekend. Replaced my OC's X2 3800+@ 2.3Ghz and Asus A8NSLI Deluxe with a C2Q6600 OC'd to 3.0 on a eVGA 680i SLi LT (T1 based) board. Didn't have to do a repair install or reload the OS, booted up without a single issue. Running my pair of BFG 8800GTSOC 640MB card(I have the BIOS for the card set to 580/1500/850), I went from just under 8k in 06 to 14.4k and Oblivion on that one map area with all the grass that we compared earlier in this thread, I went from 22fps to 65fps.

I still can't believe how much that X2 was holding me back with my setup. The settings in Oblivion were max with 4xAA and HDR on in both scenerios. But a close to 300% increase in frame rate, good grief, what in the hell was I waiting to upgrade to a C2 for?:headexplode:
BTW, where has XION been, he been perma banned or something? Also I'd like to note that my clocks for my cards are very stable with the stock coolers that came with them.

Hahaha, was it a AMD=good Intel=evil thing maybe ? :p Xion is still here but he gave up on the 2900 when it continued to perform a bit on the bad side .He currently uses a overclocked xeon quad and a h2o cooled ultra also oc .
