Hi guys,

I'm new to linux,nVidia and this forum. the thing is that I bought a system a couple of weeks ago. It runs two windows operating systems (ME and 2000) perfectly. the problem is the installation of linux 8.0 in my system. the screen goes blank when the setup program (Anaconda ) starts amd halts.

I searched hours in the web and finally reached you. when I gone thru the related threads, they were too technical for a newbee like me. could anyone give me a step-by-step instruction how to install Red Hat Linux 8.0 in my system?

My system configuration is:

Processor : AMD Athlon XP 1.7 GHz.

Motherboard: Asus A7N266-VM with nVidia 220D GeForce MX integreted North bridge chipset and nVidia nForce MCP-D integrated southbridge chipset

Monitor: LG.

expecting an early solution,
bye.

Your problem isn't your CPU, it's your motherboard chipset. The nForce chipset boards do not work with RedHat's graphical installer, you will have to install in text mode. That is, if you want to continue to use RedHat. I don't know how well other distros' installers work with nForce boards.

There's an installation guide for RH on nForce somewhere. I think it was posted here, but I'm not positive.

Oh! It's very disappointing that I can't use linux in my system in graphical mode. Anyway, is there any wayaround to get linux installed? Can it be possible that if Linux is installed in text mode, I can configure my graphical drivers and get the GUI right? If so, how can I use that? Do you know any resources that can solve my problem?

Yes, run through the installer in text mode, then boot (still to text mode, do NOT graphically log in yet), install the nForce drivers, then install the nVidia video drivers.

The nForce drivers are for Ethernet and sound, so if you don't want either of those, you don't have to use it. The only AGP driver (currently, at least) for nForce boards is the nVidia internal one, that's part of their video driver, so when you edit XF86Config, make sure you add Option "NvAgp" "1" or "0".

Hey... I have the EXACT same setup as you (well XP1800+)... ANYWAY...

Basically, you have to install RH 8.0 in text mode... once it is installed you can use the graphics... the system works quite well... if you want a DETAILED explanation of what to do search the forum of a thread entitled

"Updated nforce install guide"... I have writen the instructions in some detail... it should get you going... you will need about 30 min to get everything working...
check back if you have any more trouble

Mmmm.. Sounds something to hope:rolleyes: . I have searched through entire forum and coudn't find the mentioned thread. Anyway I went to the nVidia download site and found quite a lot of display drivers ready to download. I could find one named AMD64 -- I think it's for 64 bit processor. is it? -- and some IA32 etc.. could u pls. let me know which drivers will be more suitable to my system

Also I foud discussions about installing XFree86. is it needed to be installed seperately? What's its advantage? does the new version comes with drivers for nVidia also?

You mean you couldn't find this post?

Didn't take me all that long to find...

Yes, you need the IA32 drivers.

Yes, XFree86 4.3.0 has drivers for GeForce up-to-FX cards, but it's 2D only. Given that, I'd say try to get it working with the X version that comes with RH, it'll be easier.

You want the IA32's, I have an XP2100+ with Red Hat 8.0. The best way to install drivers is by downloading the Source and GLX source files (tar.gz) and building them yourself. The ready made rpm's will always screw up your system, and trying to build from rpm will give you a buildmeister error. Seach my past posts, one of them has the Tar.gz methond of driver installation in it:|

The "buildmeister error" is completely harmless.

What do you mean by "always screw up your system"?

Thank you all for ur kind suggestions. Sorry to respond late, as I was away from the system for two days. I've gone thru the specified thread and now little confident to do the installation.
one more doubt.. What do u mean by su? also, what will be the password for first time login session?

NB: I already have windows2000 and windows ME in my system will there be any provision for triple boot(w2k,wme & linux)?
