I am having speakers custom-built but want to buy a sub off the shelf. I expect to pay a grand or maybe less (the JL audio 7k speakers are a bit too spendy).
Here is a list I got from the guy building my speakers. Do any of you have experience or recommendations?

As mentioned in another post, I will probably get a pair of ButtKickers as well. I will prolly pick up the new Onkyo 805 receiver if it comes out in a couple weeks to drive teh whole setup.
The room is 16' by 40' by about 20' tall.

I keep hearing good things about subs from av123.com
http://www.av123.com/products_category_brand.php?section=subwoofers&brand=10
Every speaker you buy from that site is guaranteed to perform as well as or better than any speaker from any brand that costs 150% the price of theirs. They also give a 30 day full refund period. I am on a much lower budget for building my HTPC's new sound system than you probably are (less than $1,000, preferably in the $750 range) otherwise I would probably buy speakers from there.
So far I have bought just a receiver - the pioneer 816. I am still deciding which speakers to buy.
BTW what are you going to mostly use this sound system for? Just curious.

Why can you listen to howard stern, but your son can't?
If you go by the ESRB rating for what games your son can play, he's always done something mature.
according to the ratings board, in-game farting causes a game to get a descriptor of comic mischief, and maybe even raises the games rating. So whenever i hear someone say farting is immature, i tell them that it's actually mature b/c the esrb says it is.
I was fortunate enough to be able to play any game i wanted, except for a few weeks.
The way I see it, is if you chose to have kids, then you shouldn't do mean things to them like not letting them listen to the king of all media.
That is, if you chose to have kids, then you can't complain about them watching hs.

After reading all 57 threads my conclusion for a grand is the Hsu VTF-3 HO + Turbo
I currently have the SVS 25-31 PCi sub which sounds great for a small room, but it's time for an upgrade. I'd like to get the new SVS PB13 Ultra http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-pb13ultra.cfm ,but $$ is just out of range...for now. The Hsu VTF-3 HO is at the top of my search list so far.
