You should know by now that these brief claims of superiority won't mean much when the other camp flips the numbers around and cranks out a jaw dropping figure of its own, but the North American HD DVD Promotional Group has recently announced that it's currently livin' the high life. Supposedly, standalone HD DVD players now hold 60-percent of the market share amongst standalone high-definition disc players, and the recent "aggressive spring retail and marketing campaigns" are to thank. Unsurprisingly, Toshiba's heavily (albeit momentarily) discounted HD-A2 was dubbed the "best-selling next-gen DVD player model to date," and we were even told that over 75,000 HD DVD titles were sold in the final week of May alone. The countdown for the Blu-ray rebuttal starts... now.

Were it not for PS3 BD would be completely dead in the water. The standalone BD players are disgustingly overpriced.

Standalone HD DVD players absolutely smoke BD players in features, price, quality, and performance.

If HD DVD drives ARE outselling BR, then both aren't doing so hot...Toshiba slashed it's sales forecast for the year...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/12/AR2007061200281.html

"Sales in the U.S. have been slower than expected, and we are going to have to lower our U.S. sales forecast," said Yoshihide Fujii, head of Toshiba's digital consumer business.

The electronics group now expects to sell 1 million next-generation optical disc players in North America by the end of calendar 2007, down 44 percent from its previous estimate of 1.8 million unit sales, a Toshiba executive said on Tuesday.

for the price and hassle, most people don't see the HD stuff worth it.
