anyone else using a firewire HDD with vista? for some reason its quite slow.

when i transfer from internal drive to firewire hdd, its normal speed about 35-40mb/s
when i transfer from firewire hdd to network pc, its about normal 35-40mb/s

but when i transfer from firewire hdd to internal drive (on local machine) its slow, about 5-7mb/s

also when i transfer from network drive to firewire hdd its also about 5-7mb/s

note: this drive was working fine with xp, constant 40mb/s

It's the power of Vista, seriously, it's a known issue.

Multitude of angry users:

Here's the hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/931770

You'll need to call them to get the hotfix. I've had to do this for similar situations in the past and it isn't nearly as bad as calling to activate your freshly installed copy of Bloatware Ultimate Edition. :)

The hotfix dialog is misleading, in actuality the bug affects almost all File I/O in regard to Shell32.dll's COPY/MOVE/etc API. The hotfix is reported to resolve that, however, I'm not sure if it's limited only to the scope of SMB or of it extended to all copy I/O. Often times I find a KB article applies to a situation, however, the dialog in the KB isn't an exact match. Evilchris can support this I'm sure. :)

http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=1358057&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=19 seems to indicate this is a known issue with degraded disk performance during Shell32 functions and that it is to be "fixed" in Vista SP1.

Doesn't look like there's any solution for your beta OS at this time :( Honestly, I'm amazed this kind of bug made it past QC or rather the product was pushed out the door before it was ready to meet a deadline that had already been delayed twice.

I am using external (500GB PATA) Firewire drive as my backup, and it works at constant 40MB/s, which is Firewire limit..

Have Windows6.0-KB931770-x64.msu installed though.
