It's hard to go wrong with the Sony. Where did you read a bad review? Everything I have read so far is positive...
Nero won't do a good job of backing up movies if that's what you want. DVDDecrypter can take an ISO and burn it to a disc which works fine if it's a single layer DVD-5 movie. Dual layer discs require splitting, which DVDXCopy makes much easier.

From what I've heard, that Sony is the be-all-end-all of DVD burners right now.

Still don't see real point for a need of two formats -+ , but thx for input guys

That's what I have right now and I love it. Just make sure you stock up on 4x DVD-R media because there's a worldwide shortage of it. Check out ebay if you want to get some at a relatively decent price.

It's amazing but I can't find 4x +R media for reasonable prices either. Kinda frustrating actually... I gave up and ordered some Ritek 2.4x for a good price from meritline.com. If you can find 4x +R, it'll cost you a fortune.
BTW, it helps to have a drive to rip with that isn't locked @ 2x. Most DVD ROMs manufactured after 2002 rip discs very slowly. My Toshiba SD-M1612 was one of the ones that had this issue. After going to a Pioneer 106s (good luck finding these in stock) most discs will rip for me in 10 minutes or less.
