Update 21/07/2007 (Version 0.6)

This new version adds custom resolution setup, with aspect ratio fix.

Now you can play at 1280x720, 1680x1050, 1920x1200, 2560x1600, ... any custom resolution.

Also you can use wider FOV for true widescreen gaming.

And it has no performance hit.

I used this patch with my 5 USD complete copy and it works great. That was my one knock on the game, the fact that it was jaggy as hell.

Nice work walterman. Am I correct in guessing the Steam version is out of luck for this patch?

walterman

At the moment, i know that the patch works with Vista too.

I haven't the steam version, but, it should work (in theory), if you put the .dll in the same folder, with the .exe. Maybe i'll buy it too.

As for the widescreen support, i've working code for the custom resolution setup, & to change the aspect ratio, but, there's an important performance hit & there're some bugs with the aura powers & with the 2D objects in the HUD, therefore, till i have some new good ideas, this feature is dropped, mainly due to the performance.

And about the performance, the game uses up to 12 rendering passes sometimes, & some of them are for the bloom effects. Therefore, you need a lot of video memory bandwidth, and this is why i always have been complaining about the slow progress of the gfx cards in this area. At the moment, with 100GB/s you've the minimum for 1280x1024 with SSAA 2x. If SLI works, maybe you could play at 1920x1200, & i keep waiting for cards with >300GB/s for 2560x1600.

Thanks for the patch!!
I have never been a big fan of what bloom looks like in many games.
As far as I have seen it is not wortth the performance hit. But then again maybe I would change my mind if the hit was not so bad. (or the devs implemented bloom better)

You're going to waiting a long, long time for that. Shader throughput will still be the focus of most CPU manufacturers, as it should be.

If a game needs 100 gb/sec - especially one as old as Bloodrayne2 - then the fault lies with the engine and not the hardware.

Well, BR2 runs great in a 9800Pro @ 1280x1024 almost for everybody. (25 GB/s +-)

100 GB/s for 1280x1024 with SSAA 2x, equals to 1280*2 x 1024*2 = 2560 x 2048 rendering (4x times bigger), then shrinking to 1280x1024 (Super Sampling AA). It's huge rendering resolution, and the patch has an extra performance hit, cause it isn't native. So, 4*25GB/s makes sense for SSAA 2x.

This is just my personal taste, cause, i love to play with this image quality, and i need 120 fps minimum for this game.

I'm not going to tell anybody how to play or spend his money. Just try to enjoy :)

Ah...well, ok then, you've got some very high standards for "smooth". :)

You simply can't multiply the resolution however and determine what bandwidth you need, even with SSAA there are optimizations which come into play with newer cards.

Yes, we pay gold for gfx cards, so, we want the best :D

And yes, of course, there're a lot of optimizations, to save 'bandwidth' :)

Awesome! I didn't know that work on a patch like this was going on. This is one of the games I still have on my HDD. Its bloody and its great fun. Thanks alot for this.

Edit: Atm I cant download the patch, getting:

It worked in IE, but cant get it to download from Firefox. Might be my FW or something messing that up. So got the patch now anyway.

If you want to enjoy the maximum picture quality, try my nHancer profiles. Trust me. :D

SSAA is the best method for BR2, and with difference.

MSAA + STAA isn't working atm (and it should work now).

Just check the grates in your pics (no AA in them). But check mine with SSAA:

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/237/rayne22007072222483504aq0.th.png (http://img442.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rayne22007072222483504aq0.png)

Also SSAA fixes the problems with the specular lighting in BR2.

Yeah, it for sure does look alot better. Didn't have nhancer installed atm, so I just ran the patch with basic settings but will tweak it later.

Loading Club Strages is great when you feel for some bloody mayhem. ;)

Good news for Steam users: I bought my steam version today & it works too ! :)

Just place the "d3d8.dll" & "br2fsaa.ini" files into "steamapps/common/bloodrayne 2" folder.

Then edit "br2fsaa.ini" and set 'ForceResolution', 'Width', 'Heigh' & 'ForceAR' variables, to your needs:

Example for 1920x1200

ForceResolution = 1
Width = 1920
Height = 1200
ForceAR = 2

Great, thanks.

Unfortunately, there's a showstopper of a drawback for me: No triple-buffering. I'm using D3DOverrider (part of RivaTuner) to force triple buffering in D3D games, it fires off the standard Windows system sound beep/error when it's activated in a game - it's silent here when your patch is applied, and the framerate shows it. So even at 1280x960 I either get horrible tearing, or choppy double-buffering - both look like ass. My 7600GT just doesn't have the bandwidth for AA, but I was hoping at least for my native 1680x1050 res. Ah well....:(

Edit: It's not just the lack of triple-buffering it seems, even when I disable vsync and D3Doverrider and enable nothing in the FSAA ini file (and keep the res/aniso the same), BR2 is noticeably smoother without your replacement .dll than with. Wierd...

I'm so sorry to hear that you cannot enjoy the game :(

The problem is that the game needs a very very very fast gfx card. And with my patch, it needs around 30-40% more gfx power.

Some numbers
MSAA 4x: 7900GTX 56GB/s @ 1280x1024 -> 85 fps
MSAA 4x: 8800GTX 100GB/s @ 1280x1024 -> 130 fps
SSAA 2x: 8800GTX 100GB/s @ 1280x1024 -> 100 fps
SSAA 2x: 8800GTX 100GB/s @ 1920x1200 -> 55 fps

You'll need a 8800GTX to run 1680x1050 with MSAA 4x @ 100fps +-

About VSync, it works from nHancer, and you can say bye to tearing, and also, i could enable triple buffering directly from my patch, to help you with the framerate, but, there's another problem. If you enable Vsync, there're problems with the gameplay (you can't execute some combos, or throw people with the harpoon, ...) That's why i didn't implement it. Anyway, prolly i'll add that option to help with the triple buffering.

Nah I could enjoy it - the widescreen and custom resolution is enough, but that's the problem - I could run that mode very well, but just no MSAA.

Would it be possible to allow no AA modes? I've tried forcing AA to disabled, but BR2 still runs with 4X MSAA.

Walterman, the patch works well for me so no problem there. Still run in 4xMSAA as SS takes to big performance hit for me.

Anyway, I got another problem. I've got Fraps registred and Bloodrayne 2 just dont like it. I try to run half-res with low recorded fps, but the game lags horribly when recording movies however I do. Its not hd-lag, its game lag. Your patch dont affect that of course, its same with or without it.

I can record without any big performance hit in other games, f.e. Graw2 which is a fairly demanding game. Just dunno why BR2 dont like fraps. Perhaps should mail fraps guys about it.

Yes, SSAA needs an insane amount of memory bandwidth, but, the image quality is absolutely outstanding !

About the Fraps problem, does it happen with a lower resolution too ? (640x480 f.e.). I remember that the game lags a lot too with VSync on.

Just for example, the dilated perception effect, needs 12 extra passes to the scene, with blending operations. 12 passes * 3 surfaces * 1280x1024x32bpp *100fps = 18 GB/s, and this is without AA/Z/Stencil, and after the main scene is rendered.
