1.0-4349 released

NVIDIA Linux driver 1.0-4349 has been released. Go grab it at http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4349.

It features the new NVIDIA Linux installer, so please try it out!

Something that worries me, from the README for this new version:

For the 1.0-4349 release, NVIDIA_kernel and NVIDIA_GLX
src.rpms and tarballs are still provided. However, these will not
be provided for future releases. Does this imply that you will no longer be distributing the equivalent of the old .tar.gz drivers at all in a while? Or just that it won't be distributed separately from the .run script? Because if you won't be distributing them at all, ... it's time for me to get a different vendor's card. My distro will not work with anything other than source...

bwkaz: Your system will work with the installer. If it doesn't for some very strange reason (and i'd like to hear about it...), you can do an --extract-only and get the source wrapper with Makefile that way.

OK, this alleviates my fears, thank you. :) When I still had an nvidia card in my system, I always used the .tgz's to good effect, whereas the RPMs never seemed to work very well. Since I'm hopefully moving back to nvidia in a couple months, I'm looking forward to continuing the tradiiton.

Andy: it's quite nice to have an nVidia employee helping us all out here. That's good customer service, and it's part of why I'm ditching ATI. Keep it up!

I really do HOPE that video-out problems have been fixed, else I have to stay on RH 8 and 3123 drivers :(

This generic setup looks very cool, so now even linux n00bs can install it :)

I works like a charm on Slack 8.1
The installer is simply a wrapper around the old tar.gz/rpms and it may (at your option) compile the kernel-specific part.

Hope this version is more stable than the previous (more or less unusable) one.... time will tell I guess :)

After about 5 minutes of testing it would appear that the two biggest problems I experienced with the 4191 drivers have been fixed.
The 2D slowdown is gone as far as i can tell.
I was able to remotely display an OpenGL app running on the SGI down the hall !!!!!

Has anyone tried this w/ RH9? ... the readme says it should work, but I would like to hear some first hand experiences b4 I upgrade.

Do you have your kernel sources installed? If so, can you try pointing the installer to them with --kernel-include-path?

The new drivers are causing my system to hard lock when X is started.

The kernel module will load without any warnings, but when I start X, the machine locks *hard* - can't ssh in, keyboard is dead and the cpu is spinning at 100% (I can tell because my system fan cranks up).
The XFree86 log doesn't show any errors.

I have not had any problems with previous releases.
I tried using the installer first, then tried extracting the files and doing a make install - both install methods had the same results.

I'm running RedHat 7.2 with kernel 2.4.7 and XFree 4.1.0 on a dual 2GHz Xeon.

Any ideas?

Nice job guys, really. I was using 3123 because of the 2D slowdown crap with 4191, but these seem great with the 2D and monsterously better with 3D even... I got a 30% speedup over 3123 with glxgears! ;)

How's the 2D-performance? What's the situation with the NV-created 2D-acceleration scheme that was introduced with the previous drivers (and that were the cause of the 2D-slowdowns)?

That was actually how I had installed the driver this time anyway, since (in the past) I had edited os-registry.c rather than passing options with modprobe. This did work well.

I also ran through the expert mode of the installer, telling it to use a bogus prefix for all the files; this worked pretty well also.

I was wondering about the source, though. That README paragraph makes it sound like there won't be source in the future; is this the case?

All in all, the installer appears to be a good thing so far, though. :)

Just installed the new drivers on my Dell Inspiron 8100 w/ Geforce2 go and Mandrake 9.1. The news isn't good, I have a hoard of flickering lines down the left side of my display. The installer is sweet, but I guess I'll get to use the uninstall feature :rolleyes:

Time to go compile some .4191's
(strangely they worked great for me...)
