Just upgraded my PS3's harddrive from 60gb to 160GB (technically little less after what the PS3 allocates for itself) after only $85 from www.newegg.com and less than one hour work. I tend to travel with my PS3 to various locations and go to friends houses and having videos and movies stored onto it now will be even better than ever. From what I am aware of, upgrading the harddrive does not void Sony warranty on the system.

And Microsoft wants to charge $165 for a 160 harddrive add-on. Pshh. BTW, tested the PS3 with both a 5400RPM and 7200RPM and there is no real noticable difference in load times or system performance at all. I would say stick with a 5400RPM for price reasons. Also was able to store my saved game files and videos onto an external drive. Only real work you have to do is re-download any demos or PS Classics games you had before. All system settings, profiles, and everything else remains in the system.

man i hate the grip on those screwdrivers..

The HDD looks like western digital, 160gb. Shouldn't be hard to find it out. As for what has been done...pretty sweet.

I believe the price has went back up to $95 which it was originally, I just picked it up during a sale. 8MB 160GB good deal works perfectly so far.

I keep myself low-key like that :bleh: :p

No noticeable difference from 7200rpm? Do you run Linux?

I will say this is where the PS3 beats the 360 hands down. MS needs to come off of the proprietary HD ****.

Heh, might have wanted to put this in the console section.

I've been tempted to upgrade my drive but I get discouraged when I think about downloading certain demos over again.

Get a usb drive enclosure and backup your demos to that. when you upgrade, then you should be able to restore your files to the new drive. ;)

And if the recent reports are right, Sony will be releasing around 160 PSN games by March, so you'll really need that space. :)

IIRC, you can't backup demos or psn games that way. So unless I'm wrong, that wouldn't work.

I'm pretty sure he could've imaged his old hard drive and imaged the new drive with that, (that should keep everything intact)

IIRC you can backup the drive including all saves, PSN games and demos so long as they are not marked as protected or something like that. He won't be able to use the backup though to restore on a different PS3 since the games I believe are keyed to that particular PS3's serial no.

Only way I could see in backing up all your data from the older drive would be to have imaged the older drive to the new one. But only files you can copy over to an external enclsure are videos/pictures/music and saved game files. Everything else would need to be redownloaded. Which in all honesty was not a big issue either since you can go into the PS Store > download list > and redownload any content you want again and put them in queue to perform in background. Simple :)

Everything has already been successfully restored on my system, just left my content to redownload overnight, transfered my saved files/videos/music to the ps3 from the WD passport.

If you shop around a little more you can find them much cheaper. Back in 2003 when I used to buy hard drives for upgrading my tivos, it was common for me to find 160GB's in the $40 range, I even got one for $26. Again, back in 2003.

Now you can get even better deals. Not long ago this was $70:

That HD is 3.5" Drive AW. Remember PS3 drives have to be 2.5"

That's why you take a pair of pliers for your other hand to actually turn the thing. :) I've had to do that so many times when you can't get a big screwdriver onto the screw, but it's too tight to be turned by hand.

Thats over 13 games a month between now and march, being that Sony was the one that quotes that number I really hope they can deliver.

Meh, they could easily reach that number if they throw up enough PS1 downloads.

If PS3 owners are fine with that, then I guess it is ok.

Personally I don't really have an interest in the PS1 downloads but that seems like a realistic way for them to reach that number. Unless they have a ton of other psn games just waiting to be put on the store....which I doubt.

Its not so much different then Nintendo throwing up VC titles by the dozen... How many unique titles have they released for DLC? Oh none...
