View Full Version : Tutorial maybe?
I'm a complete noob and I just installed LINUX. I was wondering were I need to go to find out what drivers to install and how to install them.
I have an evga geforce4 ti4200 128mb ddr, and am using redhat 8.0
any help would be apreciated, even if you just point me towards the right tutorial/post
Thanks in advance.

Download the readme and installer file here:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4349
4 simple steps.
perform all commands as root in a terminal (ctrl-alt-F1)
telinit 3
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run
vi /etc/X11/XF86Config
telinit 5
the vi command will edit the config file as described in the readme, which you should read before installing. You are changing the "nv" to "nvidia" and commenting out "dri".
(push "i" to edit, then "esc" "ZZ" to save and exit)
oh, btw I am running the krenel-2.4.18-27.8.0

The Installer will identify the kernel for you and install the appropriate driver, or compile one if need be. I have used it today on RH8.0 with great success. That is a nonstandard kernel, so it may need to compile.. you will need your kernel sources installed from that kernel. Get it from up2date.
hmm....it says access denied, I'll try it with the fresh install
hmm...it keeps saying access denied, any ideas?
instead of ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run
I had to use
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run
and it worked, thank you :)

Yes, you're welcome.. and I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that. I typically change execution permission of files like that to allow the command I gave you.
the 'chmod' command will be your close friend soon, this will allow you to change the permission, but worry about it later! :D
thank you :)
I have VERY little unix experience
hey, in vi I deleted the part that says vesa, but I can't figure out howto type in new code....how do I start typing?
sweet, I figured it out, I edited it and now I'm rebooting, thank you
another question: I rebooted and everything came up, so I went to check my display settings, it says
Video card type: VESA driver (Generic)
Memory size: 128 megabytes
Driver: nvidia
and it does not let me check the box to enable hardware 3D acceleration
does that mean it did install my Ti4200 or not? or part way or what?
