Andy, here it is, by your request:
ferengi_lobes: please start a new thread about this. Please attach your XF86Config(-4) and /var/log/XFree86.0.log files.
I seem to be able to only attach one file per post, so I will post twice (once for each file)
Note: if I change the line in XF86Config-4 from "nvidia" back to "nv", I get a viewable X session. If I change it back to "nvidia", I get a grey screen (and can't terminate X).
As I said in the previous post:
Using Mandrake 9.0 on Asus Nvidia GeForce2 MX-400.
If I use the "nv" driver (autodetected by Mandrake install) in XF86Config-4, it works.
When I try to use the "nvidia" driver I installed from the .run file, it doesn't work. I get a dark grey screen.
Examining the XFree86 log files, I see that the nvidia driver sometimes complains about not being able to load GL, and sometimes it complains that there are no "usable" screens detected.
I followed all of the instructions in the README file, tracing the GL libs and noting their symlinks resolve to the 4349 drivers OK. And 'load "glx"' is in the XF86Config-4 file.
During the 1.0.4349 install, everything seemed to go OK, but the result is just a grey screen. So then I have to reboot (can't kill X by using "init 3") and edit the XF86Config-4 file to use the old "nv" driver. Then I'm back to a usable screen. So why not stick with the old driver? I need the new drivers because I need TV-out.
I guess I could try an older driver if there was one still available on the website, but there isn't. So, what now?
