ive been using Zone Alarm firewall, but it prevents too much crap and its too invasive for me. im looking for a firewall (preferably free this time) that has simple setup and allows me to control program access to the internet.

for now, id just like a program for win xp.

all suggestions appreciated.

I hear Comodo firewall (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) is pretty good and free.

I don't know about a software firewall, but your best bet is a router with a firewall. However, I think I'll give the Comodo one a go.

Hardware FTW! How else are you supposed to be protected for the good half hour of windows updates after a fresh install? I guess you could slipstream the updates, but do home users ever do that?

Anyone used the Yoggie Gatekeeper Pro ?

I use the windows default firewall, with Eset Nod32, Spybot Search and Destroy and Spyware blaster. All of them use insanely low resources and I never have any spyware or anything on my computer. Becuase Spybot has an immunize feature and Spyware Blaster Immunizes your whole entire computer.

What about a spare old PC as a linux firewall/router? There are a lot of distros out there for just this thing.

I have never had any problems with the built in firewall in vista.
