So for the heck of it (I haven't overclocked this thing yet, but I had been planning on it), I downloaded Core Temp and start it up. It says my poor little e6300 is hitting 83*C while browsing the internet! This is ridiculous! Shouldn't the thing be melting at that temperature?

Take off the heatsink, reapply thermal grease, reseat heatsink. Also, check and make sure the fan is blowing. If the fan is blowing and the sink is on right then its just a malfunctioning temperature diode.

Ok, so my new p35 mobo just came, and I've got it all hooked up. On this new motherboard, Core Temp shows about 50-55*C idle. However, if I go into the Easytune hardware monitor, it reports an idle temp of around 40*C.

Which program should I trust?

ETA: I'm running 3.15Ghz right now, and now Core Temp shows an idle temp of 45*C...

Core Temp I think is a more accurate program. Don't quote me on that though.

Are you using the stock heatsink?

yeah, with some arctic silver applied. I'm inclined to believe Core Temp.

Well, mines idling at 48C at 2.8, and the house is boiling right now. So your fine.
