View Full Version : DDR2 for home server?

I was thinking that since I still have my Core 2 Duo E6300, and the motherboard (Intel DG965WH) from the Retail Edge package, and I plan on building my new comp with a Quad. If I sold the cpu and mobo, it really isn't worth much so I figured since I have my old black antec case, an old power suppply , a 6600GT, and also 2 Raptor X's brand new that i haven't used for my new computer (I decided to go with 2 WD7500AAKS in Raid 0). I was thinking I could put together a pretty nice server. (Also FIOS lines are being layed down in my neighborhood, so I will finally have a fast internet connection :) ) I would be using it to host games/ vent server. The raptors would give a nice improvement running as server drives... All I need is some cheap DDR2. The Intel motherboard is max DDR2 800, so I was thinking for ram either go with 4gb of guaranteed D9HNL (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7332558&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01169&id=1118845270113), (we carry it instore and through the packaging you can see the IC's and they are all D9HNL :). its pc5300, 667mhz and then just set it to run at DDR2 800. Employee price is $43.21 a gig, so Total of $172.84 / 4gb. Or I could get 2 of these (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8221453&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01169&id=1166236338366) PNY kits. Employee price is $72.95/ 2gb, so Total of $145.90/ 4gb. I was just wanted your opinion on which do you think would get the job done for the price?

Also in terms of operating systems I was thinking about dual booting between XP Pro, and some version of Linux (not a big linux guy.... so any help would be appreciated). Just wondering what you would set it up with.

Also depending on how it runs.... I might host same games and get some nV News gaming going down :)
