X hangs on startup w/ 1.0-4349

After starting X the computer hangs with random colors on the screen.

My computer is:
Redhat 9 (workstation install)
Athalon 2000+
GA-VAX (KT400 w/ 8x)
512 MB DDR 333
GeForce 4 ti 4200 VIVO 8x

I'm using the new 1.0-4349 nvidia drivers. I tried the unified driver installer and also compiling the kernel module and the glx module.
