uhmmm the newest driver won't work on my system, and is there any way to get the 41xx work on rh9?
Only by disabling TLS.
Search around this forum for "phoebe howto" in the subject lines; a tutorial has been posted for the earlier betas, that should work with the RH 9 release.
But why isn't 4349 working?

Did you patch the 4191 sources, like the Phoebe howto said to do? You have to...

can i just compile plain kernel, and use that to build 41xx driver?
Yeah, you should be able to do that. I think.
Grab 2.4.20 off kernel.org (or perhaps 2.4.21-pre6 would be better, as that has the fix for the local root ptrace/kmod exploit that was recently found) and try it.

i'll switch back to rh8.0 now........

don't know who to blame

You can also blame Red Hat for their custom kernel.
