View Full Version : Thermalright Ultra-120 vs Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme
Whats the difference between a Thermalright Ultra-120 & a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme?
They both look exactly the same to me! ... whats the difference? is there any real major performance increase?

The extreme model has 6 heatpipes ,the prior version has 4 ,it made a small positive difference in anandtechs comparisons.I love mine tbh, using a titan aluframe 2200 rpm 74 cfm fan on it atm.

I think its worth it. If you're spending $50 on a heatsink, spend $60 and get a slightly better version.
Or you could be like me and catch free handouts from awesome guys like Mullet. :D

Hmmm thanks i hadn't noticed that, im really interested in getting one of these babys!
Anybody with a Thermalright Ultra-120 with a 3.0GHz or more overclock care so share there voltage, 120mm fan model and idle and load temps?
Same to anybody with a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme?..... if you have a 3.0GHz or more overclock please share your voltage, 120mm fan model and idle and load temps!
Thanks.

X6800 Extreme @ 3.6Ghz, stock voltage, Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E 1200rpm.
Idle: 37-40C
Load: 46C
I could probably go up to the SFF21F, system is silent, VERY SILENT. :)

Its the best air cooling out at the moment ,but at the price its at now I'd prefer to go for budget water cooling.

I bought mine for 59 eu,H2O cant be a valid alternative for that price afaik.

Idle and load @ 1333 fsb/3ghz ,temps remain the same for 1400fsb/3.15 fsb but thats as far as it will go on default voltage.
Ambient temp around 20-21 c

Im using this fan for it but it was a bit of a headache to mount it as the frame is solid alu,had to cut slots in it for the fasterners.Looks nice though :p

Well i have a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme a VANTEC THERMOFLOW 120mm 1300 - 2200RPM(54.3 - 92 CFM) & a tube of arctic silver 5 all on the way!
Lets see what a difference it makes!
Let us know how you get on. I've got an Ultra120-extreme in it's box waiting to be fitted - just cba to take out the mobo to do it despite my processor temps going up to 70 under ortho load. You might inspire me to fit it when I put in my new xi-fi. And having read that Anandtech review, I'm even more inclined to do it.
The VANTEC THERMOFLOW fans speed is controlled by the temp of the system\cpu, how does this work? i know it plugs into the mobo but can i set the temp i would like the cpu to run at? ... i wonder if im best off just not using the temp control and allowing the fan to spin full throttle? maby loud? ... maby buy another zalman fanmate2 controller and control it that way like i do with the 92mm vantec tornado on my graphics card!

Down-clocked from 3.6Ghz to 3.5Ghz, had some stability issues. I also reworked air-flow in my case...
Ambient: 23C
Idle: 25C-27C
Load: 35C-38C

Monolyth, you need to watch the individual core temps instead of the temp tracked by "CPU". Everest can monitor each core; use the taskbar or OSD to display the core temps.

You can see the OSD in this pic with the temps for my four cores.
atojar,
The Thermoflow fans have a thermistor on it to read air temp. They have a lead for mobo monitoring and a four pin connector for power. You may want to use it for the case and move a fan that can be controlled by the mobo to the CPU.

I wouldn't use the core temps. Unless my system is running extremely cool, these temps are way off.
On my system the core temps are 10 to 15C lower than my "CPU" temp, and the CPU temp is what is reported in the BIOS.
I just turned on Orthos and my CPU temp is 55C. The core temps are both at 44C. Considering my overclock, 44C seems a bit low.
I'd like to believe that, but I'd rather play it safe unless I'm 100% sure that the "CPU" temp is wrong.
EDIT: Right now my CPU is idling at 28C. The Core temps are at 20. Its about 80 degrees F in my room right now. :o

Strange, should be the other way around. Core Temps should be 10C+ higher.
