View Full Version : Nvidia Linux Update
Hello. I was wondering. Is the driver included into the .run file or is the Linux Update Utility going to download the driver from nvidia's server?? Thats because I don't have an internet connection at home & i want to use the connection from my workplace & burn the file to a cd.
afaik the drivers will be downloaded from the server on demand
So i can't use the update utility without an internet connection?
SO I have to get the tar.g packages? How do I install them?
The installer contains a kernel module for each supported distro kernel at the time the driver was released. However, if your kernel is not one of those, it will prompt you for whether or not it should contact the nVidia FTP site to see if there have been any updates posted that will match your kernel. If not (or if you tell it not to talk to nVidia's FTP site), it will compile the kernel module itself, like the tarballs do.
So no, it does not require an Internet connection at the computer you're installing it on, but it'll help to have one if you have an updated distro kernel and you don't have kernel-source installed.

You should'nt have to have an internet connection to install the drivers. The new installer comes with the latest drivers and will install them even if you are not connected to the internet. So you should be able to download them at work and install them when you get home. I downloaded them in windows and rebooted and installed them without being connected to the internet.
Thanks to you all.
I've installed the new drivers without an internet connection on my Mandrake 9.1.
Before I ran the Nvidia Update Utility I installed my kernel source and all gcc progz & libs. The installer suceeded installing the new driver without attempting to get connection to nvidia's ftp server.
Thanks to you all.
