That's right, I bought a 360. But I'm having some ****ing STUPID ass issues with XBox Live and need some help.
I setup the 360 (Premium), hooked it up to my router, and everything seemed to be working ok.
I pop in Halo 2 and try to play a game online, and realized I needed to setup a Gold account. So I enter my cc information, upgrade my account, boot Halo 2 backup, and then when I try to log onto XBox Live I get a message that states "You have an important message from XBox Live. Would you like to go to your XBox Live Dashboard to view it?" and I get two options: Go to XBox Live Dashboard, and Continue Playing Offline.
It doesn't matter how many ****ing times I go to my dashboard, there isn't a ****ing message. I've tried everything. Literally EVERY SINGLE MENU availabe on the Live dashboard.
I called Microsoft, and they were of absolutely no help as well. I was stuck on hold for about 30 minutes and finally gave up.
Has anyone else run into an issue like this? Is this simply bad Karma for my years of hating on the XBox? :(
Play another game besides Halo 2. Problem solved.

The arcade games are played more than disc based games for me.

Good point but Butter Bandit doesn't strike me as the arcade game kind of guy.

Just a hunch, but have you checked your email account that you used to register?
I remember something similar, they had emailed to my hotmail account rather than message to the dashboard.
Ok.
So you bought a 360, hooked it up, got a gold live account.
Your playing a xbox game on a 360, which is fine but there are Backward Compatibility updates.
I'm going to assume you linked your microsoft live id (msn messanger) with your 360 gamer tag? Go to http://live.xbox.com/en-CA/default.aspx and sign in.
On the right hand side click on: 'manage profile', then 'modify membership', simply to ensure you have a gold membership.
Then click back two pages and check if there are any messages 'view messages'.
Also have you tried playing offline?

haha, well, I'm mostly interested in BioShock. So I figured I'd go ahead and grab a 360 while I had some extra cash, and a friend had an extra copy of Halo 2 so I figured I'd just play that with him. I would have picked up Forza 2, but neither Wal-Mart or Gamestop had a copy of it (which is completely retarded).

I checked my account online, and I'm definitely a gold subscriber (furthermore, on the 360 dashboard, while logged in, if I select manage account it informs me it is a gold account. And my gamer tag-card-thing also has the gold border around the top of it, when before it was silver...I think.)
Offline play works just fine. I can start a single player game without issue.
A friend actually claimed he had the same problem a while back, but he couldn't recall what he did to fix the issue. Maybe it will have just ironed itself out by the time I get off work today.

To my credit I actually did refrain from making comparisons to the PSN.
I'm actually really willing to give the 360 a shot, this glitch was probably just some sort of fluke. I'm going to try getting online with a different game when I get off work and see if that works.

Have you tried downloading the latest maps? If it persists try deleting all the Halo 2 saved files.

I don't think I have any Halo 2 saved files, and if they exist, I'm not sure where to find them in order to delete them.
Do the maps cost anything? I'm not even sure I'll like the game, so I'd like to refrain from spending anything on it until I figure that out.
Of course if they only cost like 5 dollars, that's not a big deal.

Yeah, I'd clear the cache on the box then try redownloading all the **** for halo. It's like.. 4 map packs I think? and an update you need to patch it to 1.5.

There are a couple settings to check on your 360. In the System blade, go to "Family Settings">"Xbox Live Controls" and there are three categories there, "Online Gameplay," "Privacy And Friends," "Content," and I just set it to Allowed for every setting there.
There is also "Family Settings">"Console Controls">"Access to Xbox Live" so you can make sure that is Allowed too.
There have been quite a few map packs released for Halo 2 now, but they are all free. But you should be able to access XBL anyway, even without the maps, just not play Matchmade games.

They used to cost extra but now are a free download.
On that note, maybe it is your router causing the problems. Go to the dashboard, go all the way to the right, choose networking, and there is a network test option.
If you get fustrated, download some playable demos (try before you head to the store and buy), and there is a lot of xbox live downloadable games that you can try before you (buy online).
Hmm, when you first started halo2 did it ask you to download the update? If it didn't, that is likely the problem.

Oh.... and a big cure for alot of network problems with the 360..... enable uPNP.
There's also a decent site that seems to be very helpful for alot of folks aswell.
http://www.xboxlivetheguide.co.uk/
They seem to cover most, if not all XBL connectivity probs.

Does UPnP solve the annoying screaming eleventeen year-old problem?
It's ironic that I hate Xbox live but I never had any issues with it that a lot of people experience every now and then.
