I installed counterstrike for the first time in about a year today and i was shocked to see the amount of people who have 8800 cards. With other high end cards it was usually a pitiful number but with the 8800 series its 38,843. Looks like Nvidia have hit the jackpot with this one.

Its what you get when you don't launch products on time.

That's true and the HD 2900XT is not that bad a card with the latest drivers. Anyway, MikeC should have some results shortly.

At least the new Radeons work. The same can't be said about the Geforce 8 with the alt-tab memory leak bug.

Yea.... haven't noticed that one.

Seems the high end has really shot through the roof after more games then old CS1.6 got on steam hehe.. and not suprisingly.

By the way, 2900XT is a decent card, but its SO LOUD..
I reviewed one last week, and after I was done I took it out instead of running it for a few extra days.
Fan goes into high gear then and then and it is really loud, the 8800GTS was silent all the time when I was using it.
Also it had serious issues running WOW windoed, poor performance and if anything would overlap the window it would slow down to the extent that I could barely move the mouse in windows.

Altho I belive it might start to shine with more shader heavy games and more mature drivers, so it might start to pull ahead of the equally priced (atleast here) but sometimes faster, cooler and less powerhungry 8800GTS640.

I doubt that the 2900XT would improve in anything but canned benchmarks.

For people who value image quality (anything above 2xAA and 8 AF), they are terrible cards. They perform worse, use more power. I just don't see how anyone could consider them good cards. At best they are mediocre.

Yeah, they work at sucking like the crappy products that they are. I have no memory leak with my card. And even if the drivers did have one (memory leaks can be fixed with updated drivers) my card still beats the **** out of anything by ATI while looking better and not sucking as much juice.

If ATI's offering owned the 8800s in the same fashion, I would be bashing those defending the Nvidia card equally as well.

Now who were those clowns claiming that sales of the 8800 were insignificant to Nvidia? That's some serious coin right there. I remember way back in November that it was somewhere around ~ 1k or so who had them listed on this survey, now they are way out there.

The drivers do have a memory leak. If you don't believe me, look at the stickied thread in this very forum.

The end result is that, for many people, their Geforce 8s get trumped by three or four year old GPUs in terms of performance.

The market share of Intel Integrated Graphics is greater than the total market share of both ATI and nVidia combined. The money is in mainstream discrete and integrated graphics, not in high end. Which is why the companies release their high end models first, so they can test and refine them into a mainstream product.

The Geforce 8 and high end graphics cards in general represent an insignificant portion of the overall market and any game developer that wants their game to break even will spend more time optimizing their game so it will run on a wide variety of systems.

I added Valve Survey to favorite months ago. Since new survey began on 30 May, Vista share go up all the time and XP share is decline from over 92% 2 months ago, now it stand at 91.09%. I think since a week ago Vista added about 16,000 users, now Vista have 66,128 users or 7.21% share.

I think Geforce 8800 cards will be top number 1 in Valve survey in next few months when the prices go down before next generation Geforce 9800 launch in November. :)

No alt-tab problem here either. Nothing but solid performance, little to no driver issues, and a great overclocker on top of that.

Just to point out that Steam doesn't always pick up on SLI systems, so the true SLI user figure could well be a fair bit higher than is shown. I'm running SLI now but Steam says i've only got 1 card running.

Multi-GPU Systems (11600 of 918163 Total Users (1.26% of Total) )

NVIDIA SLI (2 GPUs) 11,092 95.62 %
NVIDIA SLI (4 GPUs) 2 0.02 %
ATI Crossfire (2 GPUs) 501 4.32 %

Another interesting one is the number of people running 8800's but not Vista. I would have thought the sole reason for getting an 8800 would be to run DX10 in Vista, how wrong was I:

Video Card Description
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 39,072 4.25 %

DirectX10 Systems (Vista with DirectX10 GPU) - 1.92% of users
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 13,463 1.47 %

It cost more than I would have liked for my 8800GTX... but I tell you... after having it sense march it has been worth every penny... I can't wait till the real beffy games come out and relly push it. These things have huge OC'ing room too... I have not even pushed mine yet because there has been no need. Can't wait till there is :) For the first few months of this card in Vista it was a bit rough at times with small issues... but as of now everything seems to be working good and nVidia seems to have improved thier drivers quite a bit. Then again im not using SLi so I don't really have any of those issues :p Also I Alt-Tab just fine... always have. Dunno what that issue is about!

its not a luck thing, people with 8800gts 640mb, 8800gtx and 8800 ultra dont suffer from the alt-tab bug I think, only people with 8800gts 320mb suffer from this bug, its a memory leak bug and nvidia is aware of the problem, they said the will release a fix some time in July. If not, I will try to find the way to get a 8800gts 640mb, they are a lot more expensive though here on my country (Chile).:(
