X wndows works great i even got it to display movies on a tv as a sperate monitor.. (i have a geforce 4 ti 4200) however theres one SLIGHT problem it won't shutdown. If i hit ctrl-alt-backspace it just goes black and hangs and won't do anything. I looked in my X windows logs and it says "AUDIT :1397 X:client 4 rejected from localhost" . I have tried turning off agp with "nvAGP" "0" and no luck either. It seems like X isn't allowing me to connect to its localhost server. If someone could tell me how to fix this I will jump up and down with joy. Because everything is working except for the fact i can't shut it down. Also hitting ctrl-alt-num

The "client 4 rejected from localhost" message is very likely getting logged before you attempt to shutdown. It's not you shutting down that's doing it.

You're probably seeing the same problem that a bunch of other people are seeing with VC switching. They just get black screens when trying to view another virtual console.

In some cases, turning on a VESA framebuffer console helps (do this by passing the option "vga=ask" to your kernel and choosing something other than 80x25, on your next boot), if it's off, and turning it off helps, if it's on (turn it off by passing "vga=none" to the kernel).

i guess i will just have to use the open source drivers.... because i can't have my file system keep getting corrupted every time i try and shut the thing down yeah when you hit ctrl-alt-num to switch to terminals it crashes as well..... i can't use a driver that won't let X shut down... its a shame because it really works nice when its running... and it runs fine.... it just don't shut down though..... sigh.... i really hate using windows..... but i might have to to get the full use of the card.....

Have you tried messing with the framebuffer console stuff?

yeah i tried that.... all possible combinations.... no luck.... i think it has to do with my specific card a winfast a280 geforce 4 ti with vivo... i have found a few news group posts with other people who have the same exact problem with the same exact card.... i tried to update the bios on the card but it said it was the latest bios already.... i have tried turning on and off apm stuff... i have tried agp stuff.... i have tried it on mandrake 9.1 redhat 8.0 and 9.0 and the same thing happens.... so i'm guessing i either have to wait for a change in the bios or a change in the driver..... but i mean if someone else has got this specifc card to work let me know.... i'm always willing to experiment.....

Can you send a detailed mail to linux-bugs@nvidia.com, and include links to those forum threads you mention?

it actually shuts down now.... the only real changes from the normal advised configuration were that i turned off agp with nvagp "0" and set digital vibrance to "0" and then i did one accidental thing I started X windows as root rather than a regular user when i started the driver for the first time... my only thought is there is something the driver wants to do that normal security wouldn't let it do or something ??? i don't know.... i'm just happy its shutting down now.... it shuts down even as a regular user.... so i can't say what the difference is really its running in fb mode as well.... who knows if that makes a difference..... it seems to be a rather "irritable" driver...... god forbid if i ever have to reinstall this system... will i find the magic combination again?
