It seems that DirectX 10.1 will have something called XAudio2. The long awaited replacement of DirectSound. We may be seeing hardware accelerated sound as soon as Vista SP1.

Direct3D 10.1 is an incremental, side-by-side update to Direct3D 10.0 that provides a series of new rendering features that will be available in an upcoming generation of graphics hardware.

* TextureCube Arrays which are dynamically indexable in shader code.
* An updated shader model (shader model 4.1).
* The ability to select the MSAA sample pattern for a resource from a palette of patterns, and retrieve the corresponding sample positions.
* The ability to render to block-compressed textures.
* More flexibility with respect to copying of resources.
* Support for blending on all unorm and snorm formats.

So this is what the X-Fi2 and 9800GTS/GTX will be all about then.

What a crock. You mean to tell me these features couldn't be implemented into dx10? I mean, they only sat on it for what? 4 years? Give me a break. Always a new gimmick to make the loyal have to get the next piece of hardware. I'm starting to fear I might have to go console 100% sooner than later. =/

I don't think so. Audio HAL was removed because it is yet another HAL layer that can be a source of crashes, exploits, etc. In the days when we had slower processors, it made sense. But now it isn't worth it anymore, so Microsoft removed it.

Xaudio2 is just a replacement for all things directsound, and will carry many more features than directsound.

Remember, directsound wasn't removed from vista, only the HAL was removed.

Will this mean having to go through another round of creative drivers? I really dread that.

I think this means that we won't HAVE to use OpenAL anymore to get hardware sound, but details are still not known.
