What flavor are you using?

I´ll surely be a geek, love gentoo linux, compiling everything for my machine, I know it is not more faster than other precompiled distros and it takes a lot of time but is a nice distro to learn everything about linux, config files, compilation issues (can be really frustrating sometimes) and reading manuals :lol:
I did a stage 2 compilation back when the athlonxp 1700 (I think that was it) was new...It made me a little crazy :lol: .

I've often thought of putting together another box for the sole purpose of doing a stage one. Very difficult to beat Gentoo for the learning experience, imho.

Lol, I actually tried a "stage 1 " compilation off of debian recently. After 2 days of trying to figure it out I installed Ubuntu. :lol:

Why? Too bloated for me. Leaves me in no control over my system. I like to Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS). Archlinux <3

I gave PClinuxOS a whirl for a bit, texstar and the gang have actually made Mandrake...oops, Mandriva palatable. Very polished. I just prefer Debian. If I ever talk my wife and last_kid_under_my_roof into trying linux, it would be PClinuxOS though.

If you are referring to dev tools then you shouldn't have a problem compiling them yourself.

Also the very popular mini-me version for 2008 will be released very soon. It's in test release now at a whopping 296mb iso.

There are also so many community remasters to list. Even one for the Asus EEPC.

Arch vs Ubuntu

Arch has a simpler foundation than Ubuntu. If you like to compile your own kernels, try out bleeding-edge CVS-only projects, or build a program from source every once in a while, Arch is better suited. If you want to get up and running quickly and not fiddle around with the guts of the system, Ubuntu is better suited. In general, developers and tinkerers will probably like Arch better than Ubuntu.

From the Archlinux wiki ( http://wiki.archlinux.org ). I guess I'm a tinkerer. I like to tinker with my system. Also, the AUR system is great.

I use multilib Gentoo on my AMD64 desktop, and 32-bit Gentoo on my P3 laptop. What else would I be using? See my signature. :)
