I've been using VLC for all my video needs. Works pretty good, especially in FF.

I perfer Xine-UI as it reminds me of CyberDVD. Totem, VLC, gMplayer, Mplayer, they're all great players. I personally use xine-ui
I mostly use VLC since it usually works best for me but I frequently switch between that and MPlayer, MythTV Internal and Xine.
I prefer mplayer, but since either my copy of mplayer or myself is uncapable of displaying DVD-menus, I use gxine for my complete collection of Babylon 5 TV-series. Why gxine? Because its UI doesn't suck as much as vanilla xine's. mplayer's user interface (command line) is superior to anything else I've tried.

MPlayer has experimental dvdnav support. Try starting the DVD using dvdnav://1 instead of dvd://1. If you have dvdnav compiled in it should work but I sometimes find it buggy with certain DVD's. So far VLC has had a slightly better success rate overall for me. I use MPlayer for all non-DVD content.

Now that I have wmv support for my DVD players, I don't care what I use! ;)
I just use Totem (installed on Debian as "Movie Player"). you just need the correct plugin and engine.
