View Full Version : New X1650 causing SATA hard drives to not work

It's been a long time since I've visited here and posted. I've long since upgraded from my Athlon XP system, but I was feeling nostalgic and pulled it out, upgraded the CPU to a 3200+, and everything seemed to be fine.

The Geforce 6200, however, was holding the entire system back (WoW at 20fps with lowest settings at 1400x900, and only 35 at 1280x920), and since I now have two jobs, I decided to lay down the $90 (rush processing, 2nd day air shipping) on a Sapphire ATI Radeon X1650 from Newegg.

Got the card Thursday, installed it in the system with no immediate problems. After booting it up, it would POST fine, but it will not boot up off the hard drive. Through the whole boot process, the HDD indicator LED is solidly on except during the SATA RAID BIOS screen (without it enabled, the hard drive wouldn't be detected at all, no matter the video card). It's an SATA hard drive, and it continues to work fine with the Geforce 6200 installed.

I'm hoping it's not a power issue, as this is the 3rd PSU i've used, an Antec Truepower Trio 550w which has been powering the system fine for the past few months since I got it.

Any help or pointers? :headexplode:

Unless the PSU is going bad, the PSU is not the issue. It's plenty powerful to run that system.

Have you checked all the connections to Hard Drive? Have you tried running it on a different power line? (Different plug on a different wire) It's possible that one rail is going bad or the rail that's supplying power to the X1650 is being overtaxed.

I've tried every rail possible to both the drive and the card, and the same issue comes up.

The SATA cables to the hard drive didn't even get touched replacing the card, although I did triple-check to make sure nothing got disconnected and everything is fine there.

Does the system still work with the old card (6200) back in?

Yes.

...It's an SATA hard drive, and it continues to work fine with the Geforce 6200 installed.
