View Full Version : Broken CDROM drivers?

Ok, this is just about the stupidest thing that has happened to my system in a long time.
I was looking for a quick CD copying program earlier to copy something for a friend, and I just downloaded the first thing I found, which was Sonic Recordnow.
Apparently, it isn't compatible with vista x64, because after uninstalling it (replaced it with Nero 7 Lite, which is 10000x better) my CD-ROM drivers are dead.
When I install the program, the drives work fine. After uninstalling it, they are all gone from My Computer, and they have "corrupt or missing driver" errors in device manager. Even my Daemon Tools virtual drive is dead.
What the hell did this program do to my computer? The only driver listed for these drives is "cdrom.sys", and when I tell windows to look for a new driver it says that the best one is already installed.

don't know the technical name for it, but what you did, is mest up the low level filters.
thats why i strongly advise against installing any burning program that is not 100% compatible with vista.
in xp optical drivers is made off cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys and storprop.sys (can't look up vista now, at work)
any other sys file that shows up in driver file details box is called a filter, in my work pc i have 3 (drvmcdb.sys, PXhelp20.sys andsscdbhk5.sys). All 3 of those are made by Sonic and are part of Roxio.
When you install a program that is unsupported and that program forces to install these filters that are either unsigned or 32bit, your optical drives will stop to function. If you try to remove them, uninstaller usually will not remove those.
So then what happens, either you are stuck with corrupt driver, or windows thinks that part of the driver is missing.
Run the registry cleaner and driver cleaner from NERO

Thank nekro.
Right before you posted that I found this site:
http://help.lockergnome.com/vista/DVD-Drive-missing-ftopict24113.html
I found the lowerfilters item and sure enough it had that pxhelp20 crap in there. I deleted it and rebooted and my drives are back. :)
If I had known that program was that old I wouldn't have installed it. I was in a hurry to get a CD copier and downloaded the first thing I found on Download.com. Now I know better. :o
Thanks for the help though. I'll keep those cleaners around just in case this happens again some day.

thats why i like nero, it functions with out any extra filters.
I have only one filter on my vista machine, anydvd.sys
Nero is all I use these days. Works very well.
Nero and AnyDVD FTW!
