I could be wrong here but isn't this a lot like putting a high-performance racing transmission in a car that has a 4-cylinder engine and can only go 75mph???

oh i think its much much worse than that

The card simply isn't fast enough to use all that memory. Put that much memory on a GTX and i'll sit up and take notice.

LMAO? Just make a god damn 256bit bus for these cards instead such ridiculous "upgrades".

This would be far more logical:
8600 GT 256MB (stock)
8600 GT 256MB (256bit bus, else stock)

8600 GTS 256MB (stock)
8600 GTS 256MB (256bit bus, else stock)
8600 GTS 512MB (256bit bus, else stock)

Going beyond 512MB on such cards is just plain stupid.

Not in a business sense. In our world we know better, but most people are not savvy enough. I know that many non technically inclined use just the total amount of memory as the metric for performance.

I actually used to think like that when I didn't know squat all about PC's.

I once bought a gainward ti4600 with a HUGE BLUE dual fan heatsink on it,the cooling system actually worked like crap. But when I first saw it,I was like ....thats gotta be the best ti4600 out there;)

Same situation here, except it's with memory capacity.I'm sure there are 128mb cards out there that will smoke this card,6800gt/ultra:)

lol, you almost make it sound like a Ferengi rule of acquisition. :D
(srry, been watching too many DS9 reruns lately)

I must admit, I though of Gainward to be more respectable. They still make good products though and I particularly like it that they keep having some products with better latency rated memory (like my 8800 GTS).
Those coolers they used on the GF4 Ti looked cool, never knew they were bad performers, than again Leadtek has also been down that road.

I pity the poor IT salesman that has to convince a customer that 1024MB won't do any good for that chip. I also pity the one who is momentarily stuck with only boards like that and has to sell them to people who have a clue.
(Been there :p)

yap my friend upgraded his PC from Radeon 9800 pro 128mb to geforce 7300 512mb.

Now he complains to be that geforce is crap, because he gets about the same performance.

So for business you say. So, some noob will buy this kick ass 1GB card, stuck it in the PC and be amazed by um wtf ****ty framerates? This stupid ass Gainward, it has 1GB of memory, it should be fast. Stupid junk. I'll never buy it again. Customer lost (probably forever). So much for business eh?

I think these people are more likely to be playing minesweeper and deer hunter.

Again, you are thinking from a tech geek perspective. Your market segment is not the target of this card, anyway I doubt it will be a high volume production.

Not forever, they'll learn to stay clear of such products in the future, maybe skip an upgrade cycle at most. I think the hit is more for the retailer, people they bought it from, than for the brand.

my brother has an 8600gt, pretty good value imo. when overclocked, its just a tiny bit slower than a reference 8600gts. hes not a gamer btw.....or else he would spend more than $130 on a graphics card lol.

At least this card won't be affected by the alt-tab bug that nVidia seems to not care about fixing.

Large amount of GPU memory is good, but then you need a card that can handle the large about memory too, which 8600GT canīt. useless!

But if you got a card like 8800 then 640mb/768mb is good. Can handle games better in higher resolutions, over 2000pix +++. But below that the difference between 320mb/640mb 8800GTS is not very noticeable.

But still itīs good to see that they can make a 1024mb card..
