View Full Version : can't install drivers on rh 7.3
hi, due to the rpm's crashed my pc whe load the xserver, i downloaded the 4191 drivers in .tar.gz file. after modify the os-registry.c with NVreg_EnableALiAGP = 1 and make the agpgart a module, i do the make install, to the nvidia_kernel, and it says:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o
make[1]: *** [package-install] Error 1
i downloaded the new driver but it says the same thing, and when i ran nvidia-installer, my pc crashes when start the xserver.
i have an asus A7A266-E motherboard with the alimagic 1647 chip, an asus V3800 agp 32 mb card, an athlon 1333mhz processor and i work on red hat 7.3 with the 2.4.18-3 kernel.

From the README:
Q: I've rebuilt the NVIDIA kernel module, but when I try to insert
it, I get a message telling me I have unresolved symbols.
A. Unresolved symbols are most often caused by a mismatch between your
kernel sources and your running kernel. They must match for the
NVIDIA kernel module to build correctly. Please make sure your kernel
sources are installed and configured to match your running kernel.
Please double check that your kernel sources are properly configured to match your running kernel. This could probably best be accomplished by reinstalling kernel-source-2.4.18-3.i386.rpm from your RH7.3 cds.

how do i know if the kernel sources match the running kernel? could it be fixed running make xconfig? or i just have to reinstall the kernel sources?

If you haven't rebuilt your kernel, it's probably best to simply reinstall the kernel-source rpm.

i followed your advice. but instead of reinstall i updated my kernel to 2.4.18-27.7.x and i could install the kernel and the glx. but when it's about to start xserver, it doesnīt and is says x respawning too fast it will be disabled for 5 minutes. then when i do modprobe nvidia it says:
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.18-27.7.x/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o will taint the kernel: non - GPL license - NVIDIA. See www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules
0: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 nvidia.o Kernel Module 1.0-4191 Mon Dec9 11:49:01 PST 2002
Module nvidia loaded with warnings.
then when i do startx it says
Fatal Server error:
no screen found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Conection reset by peer) on Xserver ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
=ŋ
There had to have been more errors before the "no screens found" (unless you don't have any Screen sections in your X config file, but I'm going to assume that you do). Post them. Or, (and this is the preferable option) post your new /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.

Downlaod the 1.0-4349 installer and run it. Post the /var/log/nvidia-installer.log file.
--andy
hereīs the nvidia-installer.log. i must say that i was better before i ran the installer because it caused the same bug than the rpmīs. so now mu pc is useless unless i work in rescue mode
and hereīs the XFree86.0.log
So... err... what's the problem now?
The log file seems fine, and the nvidia-installer.log is fine as well...
the problem is that when the xserver starts, only appears a green dot in the upper left corner and i can't do anything. so the only way i can work is with the rescue mode. why? i donīt know. maybe a config problem
