I was wondering why some videocards (8800gts 320mb for example) can overclock so much more than mine.

I currenly have my 8800gts at: 640/886, but that's as far as nTune and Rivatuner allow me to go (even with a HR-03 Plus and a zalman 92mm fan installed).

So what determines how much you can overclock?

I think its just the luck of the draw, i also have a HR-03 Plus with a 92mm fan on, my card idles at 47c -50c and loads at around 60c - 65c (thats with my overclocks) .... i can reach 612 clock core, 1458 shader clock & 900 on tne memory ... this is rock stable with ati tool stress tester ... if i knock my card up to 621 clock core i get very small artifatcing in 3dmark06 .... ive heard if you mod volt the card that will allow for a higher overclock but thats very risky imho! ... the exact same goes with cpu's ..... some will clock higher that others on a lower voltage, some will just clock higher that others full stop! ... as i said its just the luck of the draw i think!

by the way with the card running at 640MHz its not actualy running at that speed! .... i think the actual speed is 621 for your card at that overclock! ... what does it show up as in rivatuner hardware monitor?

Yup.. Need to go to 648 to get to the next jump. That will also put shader clock at 1512. This is what I've flashed mine to.

With 640MHz set in nTune, rivatuner shows the following.
