So this the hotfix that the following anandtech article is talking about? I thought it's only for Vista x86.

It's also for the vista 64.

does this also break the driver signing work around?

I updated these 2 files already. I was also able to update the KB940105 Hotfix after those 2 files were already updated. If u try to install a hot fix already installed, it will not let u update that file. So it has to be something different to allow me to do this.

I know the info has been out a few days, but the OP has posted links to the hotfixshare which (according to their own claims) will remove hotfixes that are made available to the public and folks that will see this thread would mot likely prefer to download files from a legit source rather than a 3rd party.

You guys are talking about the wrong hot fix, the OP posted the patch from an Anandtech article about the user memory space issues in newer games. (2GB limit). This patch is MS's failed attempt to fix that. This has nothing to do with the Performance & Reliability hot fixes.

Last night I fired up SC to with a buddy to test it. Now I could play a short small game, no problems there. But whenever the total unit count got over a specific amount, BOOM it would crash, and checking the memory usage would show that yes it was either darn close to 2GB's or well over.

This patch didn't help at all. Maybe gave me 5 more minutes of play-time. But overall not worth the D/L. What we really need is 64-bit compiles of modern games which would expand the user memory space massively. But 64-bit has yet to "capture" the market, but this limitation could be a big player in bringing 64-bit adoption to the forefront.

According to Anandtech's benchmarks the memory usage does lower some hundreds of MB with this patch on Vista since it changes the way Video Memory is managed.
It should in practice lower the cases where the 2GB limit is reached, but so it seems there are still cases where the limit is reached.
You can manually change the limit though if you want, but just do it if you're on Vista x64.

This patch works well for me. I always had COH (Company of Hero) crash @ ultra setting with Vista 32 bits 20 minutes after playing games on 8 player maps. Now, game runs well without crash!

Just to clarify... The patch lowers memory address usage, not memory usage itself. Games and Apps will not take up less memory, but will be less likely to cross the 2G address line.

Actually, i have seen memory usage a little lower myself. just 100-200MB at best, but its there.

Here is the link to the final part of AnandTech article with results of their tests:
http://anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3060&p=2

Having seen the results of the hotfix, we can unequivocally say that anyone doing serious gaming under Windows Vista should install the hotfix (and the latest drivers for their video card) at the first chance they get.

I had quite the opposite effect. This hotfix made many of my games not crash.

Well according to the site it has a different version number and date, so I assumed it would be different. I wonder what has been changed then, if anything at all.
