Hi, i wonder if its possible to use the stock cooler (XFX 8800GTS) with arctic silver 5 paste ?

Also i see that the cooler uses some kind of white "things" between the cooler and memory, anyone know if i can put paste on that ? :)

I guess i can put paste on the "GPU processor" but not on the memory, is that right ?

I have the same card, put AS5 only in GPU, clean the heatsink and the GPU with isopropyl alcohol or something like that and apply AS5, dont touch the memory, if you quit those thermal pads, the memory wont touch the heatsink and you can have fried memos.

OK, now i have put the new paste on, but at the moment its worse than the stock paste.

ATItool:
Before at load 80c after 10min
Now on load 90c+ after 1min

90c after just a minute or so, pretty bad. But it might take a while before AS5 starts working. On my E6850 the paste works great 16c idle :)

And the paste layer is very thin... as it should be.

I put more paste because the heatsink is not well polished, it probably wont make good contact, unmount it and take a look, mine idles at 50C and loads at 60C

You also got AC5 or stock paste ?

ok, now i have applied some more paste, almost half the tube, lol!
And now the temps looks fine!

Now Idle 55c
before idle 65c

This is how it look like when i put it on the first time, same thin layer as i do with the CPUs.

BAAAD!!! :) no wonder why i got 90c+ in load. jeeezzz, such a bad surface contact, this fan is a failure, if the surface contact was as good as the CPUs, then the temp could be much lower.

Well, atleast im far away from death temp

Thanks for the help!

yeah, the first time I done it got more or less same results as you, then applied more AS5 and the temp dropped dramaticly, in a month or 2 (when I have time) will lap the HSF for better contact and more low temps, glad to help :)

I currenly have the HR-03 Plus on my 8800 but had a 55 degress (celsius) idle temp with AS5. After I removed most of my paste the temps were even worse. (60+ idle). So I checked the gpu surface and discovered it wasn't flat. (measured with a digital micro spirit level/bubble level).
The surface seems to go upwards in the middle.

I fixed the problem by applying the AS5 in 2 straight lines left and right of the gpu center.

The GPU is currently running 41/42 Idle and 50/55 Stressed.
Keep in mind that the 8800 is 20% overclocked.

(HR-03 Plus + Zalman 92mm fan)

Edit:

I also have a friend who claims the thermal paste that comes with the HR-03 gives him better temps.
But I find that hard to believe since it's just the default free paste :P

Yeah, whenever applying thermal paste to a videocard I always take off the heatsink several times to ensure full contact.

I replaced my stock cooler with a dangerden 8800gtx water cooling block and used AS5 on the core and memory. Took me a good 5 times to get enough on the core. But it's just the right amount. Idles at ~35C and goes to ~50 under a full load. Couldn't be happier.

I've never heard of lapping before, what is it and is there a guide somewhere? :p
thanks

You can do in your heatsink, in your CPU, etc...
