check out what he really said (http://sports.aol.com/story/ar/_a/materazzi-finally-reveals-zidane-insult/20070818115809990001)
freaking Italians.
Zidane was setup and he fell for it. Shows his mentality, he should have known better and been in control and France should have won. But instead he lost control as was anticipated.
Come on, they talk trash all game long. He's played in some of the most high-pressure games around and they WILL talk trash.
This is on a lower scale than the racist crap a number of the good black players have to listen to and you don't see them running around head-butting peeps :)
Instead of him ignoring it he head butted the guy and got sent off. I know its very hard to keep your cool in situations like that but frickin hell.

You can call it a lower scale but to react in that manner in a match of that magnatude is unacceptable as the results proved for the French. Zidane was suspect to this tactic and the Italians used it and it worked. To see Zidane taken off I lost interest in the match and I was in no way favoring the French.

My question is; why did he head-butt the italian ... on the chest?!
If you're going to get physical on the field and have accepted the fact that you are going to get a red card, rather do it properly.

He would have made little difference in the penalty shoot-out, much like Baggio's miss was NOT the reason Brazil beat Italy prior to this.
He has always been a hot-head and people have said a whole bunch of other crap to him. Watch some of the foreign broadcasts and you'll sometimes hear the stuff they say on the field. Or, go to a game :)
This was hardly worth getting mad over but, it is Zizou after all :)

If that worked and got everyone mad, I would use it every game to get someone sent off! I've heard a lot worse in cricket to be honest (and thats not a joke).
He needed to be more professional and if he was gonna do it he might as well have got him in the face as this was his last game before retirement.
